Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Maybe this post has already been answered in the documentation.
I need to know what apache modules the latest version of ZC needs (not yet installed), and I need to know how to load them into apache, Debian has nifty commands like a2enmod xxx to enable module and a2dismod, also I installed a full web server by using just one Debian command: tasksel, so I don't really know everything it installed, but it looks pretty good judging from the parallel local webserver I have in my computer, and which I use for comparison. NEW! Now accepting suggestions. Thank you.

Let me rephrase title:
Which apache modules does zencart need installed?

see:
https://docs.zen-cart.com/user/first..._requirements/
else run the index.php from the zc_install directory.
while i have not found the tests to be perfect, it will tell you what various modules that it thinks you might be missing prior to doing an install of the database.
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
I am old user of zencart, old in both senses of the term.
And I am a total newbie in Linode, but I have a lot of storage and computing power at my disposal.
I have already transfered a copy of 1.5.8a.zip to my /var/www/html folder.
I don't want to mess anything up at this point.
Since I have this much power I might need to load other websites, which could be other instances of zencart, now the question:
if I unzip the file will it create its own folder, which I can later rename to do virtual hosting, or should I create folder now and move the .zip file in there?
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Solved, unzipped the downloaded file and renamed it to something suitable for virtual hosting.
I will have more questions later on
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
How do i mark thread as solved?
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
There's no mechanism for doing that; you just move on to the next thread.

After doing what you did: identify how it was resolved and that it was. Then move on. :)
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
I just upgraded from Debian 11 to Debian 12, it is beautiful.
It comes with php8.2 to make Debian developers happy.
IF you want even more speed (I do), and provided you have apache2 installed, you have to run as root:
1. a2enmod proxy-fcgi setenvif
2. a2enconf php8.2-fpm
I had php-fpm installed in Debian 11 so it is just a change in config.
Previous to upgrade you have to:
1. install all latest upgrades to Debian 11.
2. comment out the backports repo (you can reactivate it after dist-upgrade).
For questions, post in this thread, I will see all new posts and respond.
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
I have a question? How do you like Linode? I have a couple dedicated former media temple servers which just migrated over to godaddy and was looking at alternatives to that ecosystem was fine when MT was apart for several years and before that but no longer apart. Was thinking of pivoting a couple websites someplace so I can get off godaddy rapidly if needed.

i have 3 VMs at linode. personally i am a big fan.
note that akamai bought linode over 1 year ago. but i have not noticed any change in the service. up time remains staggeringly high for my VMs.
best.

I concur, thumbs up.
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Debian 12 is fairly new, very good but I don't think that Linode has images with it, you will have to install Debian 11 and change distribution by upgrading to 12, it's easy and you will get PHP 8.2 (recommended by Zen Cart) in a stable distribution, so you will not need to install other repos.
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Thanks for tip on the 11 to 12. I may do this over the Summer appreciate the insights from you both.

i am rarely a fan of in place upgrades on O/S; especially for public facing servers. i like starting with a fresh install...
and in looks like linode does have a debian 12 image available for deployment. see:
https://api.linode.com/v4/images
best.

You are absolutely right, I ran into trouble when editing sources.list in Linode, will check tomorrow with them abut the Debain 12 image, WARNING do not attempt this on a live server, you will break your websites, I am subscribed to Linode backup service so can recover.
It worked on my local test server, but not on Linode, in local I upgraded from Debian mirrors, in Linode I had to use Linode mirrors
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Just an update, don't worry be happy, I broke my live site by not following my own directives, but I now fixed it by following my directives.
The update from PHP 7.4 to 8.2 is not automatic, read my previous post, if you did not have php-fpm installed previously you have to install it then launch the commands in page 1, I got them from apt while performing the upgrade in my local system, same thing works on linode, sorry for demeaning the linode mirror.
Remember: a2enconf php8.2-fpm
systemctl reload apache2
Lastly make sure with apache2ctl -t (configtest), you should get Syntax OK. No need to type configtest, -t is shorthand.
Re: Istalling on a naked Linode Debian 11 server
Finally, it is best to get the Debian 12 image and start fresh!!
Less trouble, but I already had a site in there
