Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Received a message from The Google Team stating to now submit Froogle bulk upload files (formerly known as product feeds) to GoogleBase. Froogle Merchant Center is no more, but Froogle is still available. Sounds like Froogle and GoogleBase will eventually become one and the same.
I'm hoping both Tim's and Andrew's Froogle feed modules will continue to work.

For now everything still works file as file as the file that is generated and uploaded. The only change is that we now upload to a new server: uploads.google.com. The same username and password still works. You can also upload from GoogleBase interface if your feed is less than 10MB

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
And now we can use four formats: Tab-delimited, RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0, and Atom 0.3.
I think to support only Tab-delimited and RSS 2.0 formats. And add optionally attribute support.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
right...
froogle feeder has stoped working correctly for me, and is sating that my files are not utf-8 compatible....
some of the fields have changed on googlebase, so i have adapted the frooglefeeder to adopt these new field headings, but am struggling on the utf-8 bits...
any ideas people ?

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Big changes on how the adds are showing up on Froogle also. Really has negatively affected sales for me. Time to study.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
We had 154 error (none before this change) when uploading our Froogle File Generator file to Google Base
Is anyone addressing this???
Thanks

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Same here as far as errors. Almost half of my products were excluded due to errors.
Hopefully someone will know how to fix this. I sure don't! :(
I will keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks,
Kelly

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Please post example error messages GoogleBase is displaying for your feed(s).
This will provide some info for Andrew and others to go on in attempting to resolve these issues.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
it is all to do with the new headers for the feed,
i have a modified version of froogle.php if anyone wishes to examine it, however, i still get a full set of errors for all my products, as the output file is not UTF-8 compatible.
now the changes i have made have not effected this, as it was one of the errors i was getting anyway.
so if someone can sort that bit out, i think we will be laughing.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I got a message from google telling me my files had all been uplaoded successfully (which is odd, because the Google Base site tells me they have all failed!). They also added this to the email:
"Using Froogle attributes: We noticed that your bulk upload is using attribute names specified in the Froogle product feed format. We highly recommend that you use the attributes specific to the Google Base bulk upload format in your next bulk upload, as including information for these attributes will help users find your items. For more information about the Google Base bulk upload format and a complete list of attributes, please see the following link:
http://base.google.co.uk/base/tab_instructions.html "
My other site is marked as disapproved, but when you click on it , it says success. Also the number of products bears no resemblance to what I have on that site. All in all a complete balls-up!
I had really given up with Google Bse in the past because of all these problems, and decided to concentrate on Froogle. Now I've been thrown back in the nest of vipers. Ho-hum.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Oh dear, this is a shame. I was getting good business via Froogle. Why did they have to mess with it?
Are we all using the Froogle Feed generator in Easy Populate 1.2.5.4?
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
To be sure you're seeing all you product that is uploaded make sure you do the following:
To turn off SafeSearch in order to see adult products, click on
"Preferences" next to the search box on the Froogle homepage,
http://froogle.google.com. Once you select your preferred level of
restriction, Froogle will save your preferences.
Make sure you have cookies enabled on your browser or the preferences
won't be saved.
I know I said adult but it's kinda funny how Google decided what to know show you until you change your preference. I noticed I wasn't seeing all the products Google claimed successfully uploaded. It turned out that Google was hiding some on our Adult Christian T-shirts. Funny that Google sensored a Christian T-Shirt as adult content.:shocking:

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Hi,
The error I receive is:
25 An invalid encoding was specified for the bulk upload file - help
An unusal chain mail frame bag with chain shoulder strap which can be hidden to create a clutch bag. Availiable now only in white -this seasons new black!!
Clicking on the help link shows the following:
Your bulk upload contains an invalid UTF-8 character. If you are using Notepad to save your file, please select "Save As" and then select "ANSI" or "UTF-8" in the "Encoding" options.
there are 240 items in my feed of which only 68 succeed. The feed worked fine whilst it was Froogle.
HTH with the troubleshooting :)
Q
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Do you see the square box in this text, "-this seasons new black!!"?
Whatever that character is you must remove it in your upload file.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Yes I have done and it's working ok now:) I was only posting the errors as Woodymon wanted an example.
Unfortunately this means downloading the feed every time, opening it and removing the cahracters before submitting. Previously I simple ran froogle.php, it created a new file and automatically uploaded it to the froogle server. I'm hoping that posting the error may give someone a clue as to what to change in the contrib to allow it to work as before.
Cheers,

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Well I tried uploaded the Froogle file from froogle mod, and I uploaded it FTP. Well see if it works. There is a limit as to how many megabtyes you can upload now. What a pain in the Bu**!
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
IT WORKED!! woohooo!!
You have to upload VIA FTP, i tried uploading just by clicking Browse and it didnt work, but the FTP worked.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Has anybody modified the original froogle generator to help with the new google base? Anyone know if there is better luck with errors using Tim/Andrew's generator. They both worked perfect with froogle but now it's hit/miss. It's not a fault of the mod just new rules :(
It's very cumbersome to try and adjust 1,000s of product by hand as 1/2 my products are throwing error and they were fine with Froogle.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I used the froogle file feeder and I worked just fine.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
jewelrylady - have you logged into the googlebase website to verify there's no errors in your upload? Without changing the froogle feeder none of the products should have been successfully read by google.

Yeah! I logged in and GoogleBase is telling me I have 811 errors even though it's the same feed that I used to upload to froogle. I am not sure why GoogleBase cannot recognize the same information that Froogle processed just fine.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
When I did my first feed after Google switched, I had over half of my products missing and a ton of errors. The next time I generated a Froogle file from admin, I clicked on save file as and saved it as a text file. I always did this prior to the change and simply locate and upload from Google. My file is small enough I can do that. But anyway...this time I made sure to pay attention to the encoding. I saved it with UTF-8 encoding and didn't have one single error.
Just thought I would add that in the event it may help someone else.
Good Luck!

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
In case I didn't explain myself well, I use one of the contributions that allow you to create the froogle file in the shop admin. You can then click on view file. When viewing the file you can go to file and then save file as. First choose the file name then the type and finally you choose the encoding. By clicking on ecoding you are shown a drop down menu giving you the options. I have included a screenshot.
I hope this helps.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Kelly, thanks for the idea about saving it as UTF 8. That significantly reduced my error. I will look more into the rejected products to see what's common with them.
Does anyone know where I will change the headings for the googlefroogle generator so that it uses the new heading instead of the old one?
Thanks!

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
if anyone cares to look @ my original post on this topic, i have modified the froogle feeder to outpu using google base's new field headings, however, the feed isnt UTF-8 compatible..... this was the case before i modified the headings.....
i am waiting to see if anyone can correct this issue, if they can its a case of uploading this one new file, and you can use froogle feeder with google base.

I've been awaiting Andrew (a_berezin) to follow-up on this but I don't see him on the support forums anymore.
Appears than many of the international based Zen Cart mod developers have been scared off. This is most unfortunate.

I believe the file you modified is Tim's Froogle generator file not Andrew's GoogleFroogle which what we are interested in.

You can have both Tims and Andrew's mod installed at the same time. Originally I was not able to do this. But after some simple tweaking of the SQL patch file for one of the mods (can't recall which one) I was able to make it so one of the mods would not overwrite the other mods db entries, thus allowing both to show up in the Admin Configuration and/or Tools menus at the same time. This may be documented in one of the mods support threads in the Archived Contributions forum.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Hi everyone,
I had utf-8 problem mentioned and after doing the manual file change mentioned above I tried changing googlefroogle.php.
Even though it's only a small change it seems to have stopped Google server complaining about encoding, try it if you wish.
NOTE; I am using Andrew's google feeder module on two different servers. Only one of the feed files threw errors, it seems to be dependant of php server settings.
On approx lines 55 and 89 the code:
fwrite($fp, $output);
becomes:
fwrite($fp, utf8_encode ($output));
As you can see I have just called a inbuilt php function to encode output in utf-8 when written to file, for documentation of function:
http://au.php.net/manual/en/function.utf8-encode.php
I hope this helps someone.

Thanks Rob. Solution worked perfect.
So everyone is on the right track the above two edits are needed in the googlefroogle.php located in the root of the store.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I submitted to google base and it seems it worked but I got an email back with the following: (does anybody have a solution to change the headings?)
Hello,
Good news - the content of your bulk upload has been approved. However, we noticed that there were a few changes you could make to help users find your items:
- Using Froogle attributes (fields)
-----------------
Using Froogle attributes (fields): We noticed that your bulk upload is using attribute names specified in the old Froogle product feed format. For example, you've included "product_url" as an attribute name, although this attribute is named "link" in the Google Base format. Please convert your product feed to the new Google Base format by changing the attributes names in your header line:
http://base.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=40443
After you've made any changes, please be sure to re-submit the new version of your bulk upload with the same filename. If you have any questions, or need additional information about these suggestions, do not hesitate to respond to this email.
Sincerely,
The Google Team

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
you have to change the first word under froogle.txt to say
link then upload it
so the top row of your froogle.txt file should read:
link name description price image_url category offer_id

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Thank you, I figured so much. Editing the heading in the froogle.txt by hand is the quick fix or not so quick if you have to do it over and over again.
1st:This should probably adjusted in the code somewhere so it outputs the correct headings. Did anybody do this already. I am not a coder and do not know where to start. I think many of us would appreciate a code fix for this.
2nd:Will automatic upload work anytime soon in the future?
By the way I changed googlefroogle.php as instructed in this thread and I managed to upload the file to google base. I see all items listed in my account. I did this yesterday and I tried to find my items in Froogle today. Not listed yet. Does anybody know how long it takes for froogle to list me feed? Is something wrong with my files or am I just not patient enough?
:)
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
the fastest way i've done it is go thru the process to generate the froogle.txt file...copy it to your computer, edit that first word...
log into google base...click on the batch upload, then browse to your file and click upload
when i upload with ftp it doesn't work right, same with zencart...so i just do it this way for now.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
So long nobody could correct four lines?
1. Add Encodes an ISO-8859-1 string to UTF-8;
2. Use Google Base fields name.

Here is what I have tried and am awaiting results from google base.
Go to the Admin\froogle.php file
In your text editor do an EDIT>FIND on product_url
Change all entries of product_url found to link and save the file.
This seems to work as far as what I can visually see with the file but am waitng on google to read the file so I'll know later.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Ok, looks like it was all good. I have a success indicator on the file I tried already.
all 235 item...up from 110 showing in the list...
whooohooo!

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
BTW, I also editied the froogle.php file as mentioned earler in this thread to encode with UTF8. Used the dame instructions as the googlefroogle ones but did it in the froogle.php file near the end. Seems to have worked here as well.

It works already. Have you set up the cron job? Assuming your hosting account supports cron? Sometimes you have to upgrade vhost account so that it supports cron.

Correct, you can do it manually.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
why is it that this isnt feeding a file of all my products, it only loads like 1500 of the 4700.... when i export a file from EP, it gives me all of them... whats up with that?
and how do i fix it?

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I'd fix it by not using EP and install the mod from this thread.

I just installed the mod from here, with the same results.
it seems like the file is different sizes each time i create it with the feeder....
so i changed the admin timeout to 3mins instead of 1, but that didnt do anything eather.
what else could i check???
this is really odd. it is loading some of my newer products but not all of them.
i did the reset master catagory again too, but that didnt help eather.
also, it seems with this new version of the mod, that there is a new button for the config, but no new button for the tool to create/upload?
does everyone else have the same thing?

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Hi, I have a question. I've installed this mod on a 1.2+ shop. I created the froogle.txt file and created an account with google/froogle. But when I upload a file it tells me to check back in an hour. When I do check back it said that it fails, but the reason it keeps giving is an internal error. Has this happened to anyone else? What else can i do?

1. Add check for Google Froogle settings.
2. Use ISO3 for countries

Froogle is gone - morphed into Base. Upload to base.google.com (at least for me anyway).
Regarding products not showing up - if you have products priced by attributes they won't show up in the generated GoogleFroogle file.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
In your experience, the first time you upload items to Googlebase, how long does it take to get them to show up on froogle? Its been over 24 hours and still nothing. Thanks.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Mine showed up within an hour when it finally worked. Right there in all their glory in Froogle, photos and all. Very exciting. But this was about my tenth attempt.
I started our wrong by thinking this was an Easy Populate thread on the froogle function in that mod.
Questions - comments:
Froogle Google mod latest link in this thread was installed per instructions but I can not use the admin upload function. It doesn't recognize my user name and password. So I log on to Google Base and use the file upload there, after transfering the txt file in the Feeder folder to my harddrive.
TWO COMMENTS:
1. The googlefroogle.php file is placed in the admin folder. Is that right? When I click tools > Google Froogle Feeder, I get a page that looks like the alt_nav.php at the top (the admin site map) with weird navigation at above the page. The functions at the bottom of the page regarding the froogle feeder work, however.
2. Did not see in instructions to set permissions on folder named Feed, but had to do that before anything would work.
I'm a little worried there are some unknown bugs here that may complicate other functions later.

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Note that your ftp password for Froogle/Base may be different from your Google login password. You can reset your ftp password on Google Base site if needed.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I'm stumped. This is my first go at froogle and apparently I don't know what I'm doing. I've uploaded all of my items, here is a screenshot to prove it:
http://www.moissaniteco.com/froogle-results.gif
Here are a few of my items I can see if I click on the links in my google base admin:
http://www.google.com/base/a/1317959...55628926820053
http://www.google.com/base/a/1317959...88771658021660
If you click All Items by MoissaniteCo.com the page goes blank.
And I cannot find any of them in froogle. Am I, by chance, uploading to the wrong to something else that is not froogle?
Its been over 48 hours since I uploaded.
Anyways, any advice from the more experienced froogle users would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Sorry to double post - I installed this successfully on v1.2, but the option in admin->tools->Google Froogle Feeder. I can run it manually, which works fine. Could it be because I had the old Froogle generator in this category? If so, what's the best way to get rid of it?

Hi Andrew! I know how much it would help newbies (and myself!) if you could make a quick link to your excellent contribs in your sig. Many thanks!

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Kelvyn/a_berezin, do you have a link to the updated GoogleBase generator? Well, the link is posted above by Woodyman. Sorry for the post :)

I tried to upgrade to this version and I am encountering some difficulty. When I backtrack to the previous version everything works fine again. I really want to upgrade to deal with the Priced By Attibute issue ;-) Thank you so much for addressing that problem.
Anyway, when I upgrade and click on the link to create my product feed I get the pop up window but instead of reporting the progress it churns for a little while and then I get a message from Firefox -
The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
* This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept
cookies.
Checking my logfiles I don't see any errors. I just get several lines that say the following -
208.196.76.36 - - [14/Aug/2006:17:17:48 -0400] "GET
/shop/googlefroogle.php?feed=yes&upload=no&language=en¤cy=USD HTTP/1.1" 302 - "http://rugratsva.com/shop/admin/googlefroogle.php" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6"
I'm stumped at the moment. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked and everything is fine .. tried changing settings to see if it made a difference and nothing.
I tried running it from the command line and it runs and completes but froogle.txt only contains the column headings so I can only assume I'm messing something up somewhere. I can switch back to the previous version and it works fine except it doesn't pick up the items priced by attributes.
Will keep bashing away at it ;-)
Thanks again!

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
I had no problem with any of my items using EasyPopulate to export a froogle feed. Also I find googlebase much more responsive and quicker to update than the old froogle... but I do notice my sales have dropped right around the time googlebase came out. This may be coincidental.. but is anyone else seeing negative sales effects?

qhome, I have noticed a drop too but I am not sure if it has anything to do with googlebase. The one thing I know I don't like is that google now hides the froogle menu option when you go to http://www.google.com. You actually have to click on more to see froogle. They are hiding froogle in put in its place video...:shocking:

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Google still displays your products at the top of search results if your price is competitive and it is being searched by the user

Competitive pricing is a relative term when it comes to Google Froogle as many retailers submit product feeds to Froogle with lower prices than on their website just for position. It's against Google's policy but many times when I click on a competitor's listing, the price listed on Froogle is often lower than the price on their website. It's even more true with listings from eBay Store and some comparison shopping sites.

Yea i still see my site up there... funny thing tho, and I'm not sure if its just because my site images have become more popular recently, but I have the user tracking mod and lately I've been noticing a massive increase in referrers from "images.google.com?search=xxxx.jpg" and they get a link to my images. I get them from all over the world for people who search the names of items that I have in the image database. They are mostly just one click people.
I'm thinking I've gained higher popularity on the images directory in the last month than I had in the past 8.
The next question is do I change the names of the pics to something less descriptive (instead of SonyTV.jpg, use 1d2452.jpg instead) or do I accept the slight hit in bandwidth and accept the extra free advertising, hoping that when people come to steal my images, they also stop in to shop...
thoughts?

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
v 1.2.5 16.08.2006 19:42
1. Don't use redirect to setting up language and currency - directly use google froogle settings in sql-request.
-
Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
You really have to keep an eye on image/bandwidth theft.
We have a large problem with that especially with sites in Mexico and South America.
We have a utility on our forums that prevents image hotlinking but we do not use it on our store site due to some images we have being used on other sites with our authorization.
We track all of these and when they build up enough in traffic on one image, we will switch that out with a free advert for our site. It is usually several weeks before the site owner catches it.
We are now using the watermark on our large images so we do not think the large images will be a further problem.
BTW - does anyone know any other FREE alternatives to Froogle that accept feeds at no cost like they do"?

You may enable hotlink from your other sites
For ex. .htaccess
Code:
<FilesMatch "\.(php|phtml|php3|inc|c|htm|shtm|shtml|pl|cgi)$">
Order Allow,Deny
Deny from all
</FilesMatch>
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://www.this-site.com" local_ref=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://this-site.com" local_ref=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://www.another-site.com" local_ref=1
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://another-site.com" local_ref=1
<FilesMatch ".(gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png)">
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from env=local_ref
</FilesMatch>

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
Alright, this may be silly but...where the heck is the link? The link in the "contributed add-ons" thread gives me the older version that I already have installed. I've cruised through this thread and impressively managed to miss any links to the current version.
Where is it? :-]

Re: Froogle Merchant Center merged into GoogleBase
A_berezin, thanks for the updates. The mod installs and update to Google Base. The only problem is that it errored. These are the two errors:
Attribute was incorrectly specified - shipping sub-attribute
Attribute was incorrectly specified - sub-attribute of shipping
I did check the file that was generated and indeed the above two titles are column headings for two configuration options:
Show Ship To Locations
Lowest Shipping Costs Status
However, setting the above two options to false solves the problem.
