FAQ Manager

I am trying to install the FAQ Manager 1.(2) into our new test system running 1.3.5 of zencart.

The files upload fine, but when I try to install the SQL I get the following error:

1062 Duplicate entry 'SHOW_FAQ_COUNTS' for key 2
in:
[INSERT INTO zen_configuration VALUES ('', 'Show FAQ Category Counts', 'SHOW_FAQ_COUNTS', 'true', 'Count recursively how many FAQs are in each FAQ category', @t4, 9, NULL, now(), NULL, 'zen_cfg_select_option(array(''true'', ''false''), ');]
If you were entering information, press the BACK button in your browser and re-check the information you had entered to be sure you left no blank fields.

I deleted the tables in relation to faq_xxxxx but still get the same error as above.... ?

The only partial solution I have come up with is that the reason this is happening is we are trying to enter data into the database that is already there, or at least some part of it is identical that must not be.

What we are getting there is a duplicate key error. There's a column in the database that has a unique key defined on it, so any time it see's that data is being entered into that column that is identical to data already in the column, we get the error.

Long story short, I simply replaced "INSERT" with "REPLACE" in the faq_manager.sql file and it worked like a charm. I am attaching the updated faq_manager.sql file.
Worked for me BUT USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.:blink:

Well before anyone runs and does this. It did work but it also failed.
It did install data to mysql but at the same time it also replaced data already there. So my fix is a start but IT DID NOT WORK.
Can someone with alot more experience give this a crack?

I'm getting the above error, so my index doesn't load fully and I have no idea if this mod will work.

Anyone have a fix for this? I am running 1.3.6 and the site in question is www.fuzzibunzdepot.com

I just chose to scrap using it. "Much easier":yes:

Well Dang. It's such a great idea too...

I agree so I have removed the module. Having said that I think that it should be removed from the download section until a fix is available.

I really would like to use this module since it could help my customers.

It's always a good idea to check how many have downloaded the module and search for posts before installing any non-stock feature. This will save you a lot of time as some are not compatible with newer versions, or not 100% tested and buggy.

It doesn't work anymore right now. I did not design the actual contribution, I just changed a few lines of code to make it compatible with version 1.3.5. But it obviously does not work with 1.3.6. I would recommend uninstalling it until a fix is found. Sorry about all the confusion.

It has worked for me and i'm using version 1.3.6. With this mod you have to be careful there is a file you have to mod application top. as far as the sql file it works also. if you want me to send you the file i have p.m me.

Hi Guys,

Ok, this sql statement is telling you its trying to insert the same piece of code twice into the configuration, this is because there was a duplicate in the sql within the contrib.

I have updated the contrib sql and will reupload the contrib Monday 20 November.

I realise the contrib requires to be updated but this won't be happening anytime soon because we are just too busy, however i will try and reply to this thread as much as i can to resolve some of the problems.

The changes in application_top.php have as a result, that the text on main page is shown also on every main-category page. This is not what I want. How can we solve this problem. For this time i comment out the changes in application_top and deactivate the FAQ-Sidebox.

I did a search in the files for p.products_date_available but could not find it in the files..

I solved this now by adding a field p.products_date_available in the faq table and now it works perfectly

The reason it SEEMS to have worked 'perfectly' is because there is now a column there for the script to reference, however this is wrong and the script will not function properly because the script need to be changed as above, adding another column will only make the error disapear.

It seems to work perfect now and all faq's are displayed. Maybe I am missing some functions the scipt should do but i do not know what they are.

I found however another bug.
After installing FAQ manager when clicking on a top level product categorie when this categorie has Sub- categories the mainpage text is displayed. This is caused by the faq manager script because when i comment out the addition in /included/ application_top.php all functions normal again (for the categorie selection this is. Only the faq manager box triggers an error then.)

So which file or files does p.products_date_available need to be changed in?

I noticed this contrib is heavenly drawn from the products display and info files. Maybe this error occurs using a function or class or include from the products files.

This contri is not compatible with 1.36 yet.


Also the button "Ask a question" is only displayed in FAQ ALL and FAQ NEW but not when displaying a FAQ selected from the FAQ CATEGORIES. I would like this button on all faq pages to apear and maybe as a feature request also on all product pages with the possibility to switch it on and off on admin? (e.g. in Admin config: "Do you want to display the "ASK QUESTION BUTTON" on the product_info pages?)

The main thing that bothers me is that de main page description is shown when selecting a top-gategory that has subs.

I checked all files but cannot find what causes this.

the FAQ mod is causing the main page to show up on other pages
seems like the ../open-operations/faq_aplication_top.php is causing it
when i removed the directory and disabled the box it started working normal again!

is there a fix for this, as i do want to bring it back to my site?

You need the extra application top to make sure the categories show properly, without it they wont show.

Anyway open up includes/modules/pages/faq/main_template_vars.php and look for line number 129 (or around there) it will most probably say this:

On the intial release from Open Ops this software was not usable at all, we then took it on board for use with one of our clients and developed it so that it would work the way we wanted it to, now your right in that the ask a question buttons etc are only on certain pages, this is because thats the only pages we used at the time of development and it would be a waste of time to develop it further since we also have to live we need to make money ;).

However, this mod has alot of potential and we have already sorted alot of the major problems with it, but are still developing it to be more user friendly and actually a good working mod, but again this does take time more so since we are running a very busy development company ourselves.

I will be updating the mod very soon, or in a month or too but it will be alot more functional with less problems or even better none at all.

Currently though even we are coming across things that really shouldnt be there and its quite surprising that they are.

We are also getting the following error. Only on the 'faqs_new' page.

I understand that we have to change 'p.products_date_added' to 'pfaqs_date_added' but can not find where to make the change. It seems like it should be very easy to fix if someone can tell me where it is.

I installed this before I read this thread. I asumed it would work since it was in the downloads section.

Should I remove it and wait for the upgrade?

I think it's better set the FAQ question description field as not required when submiting a question. Any idea how to do that?

You would need to edit the header.php file within includes/modules/pages/testimonials_submit/header.php.

You may also want to remove the little red star too which can be done within the actual template file.

Will it be working for 1.3.7 in the near future? I can't get past the database error.

I'm using 1.3.7. It is working fine with Derek's FAQ. However, I did change quite a lot to get it work on my site. As for database, I did not upload through zen cart sql patch, I used phpmyadmin sql to avoid 1064 error in SQL syntax.

Cool I'll use myadmin. Got any other tips for getting it to work? I'm impatient and I already added a link for it.

Don't forget to backup your database before you do any changes. When I import FAQ sql, myadmin doesn't seem to add prefix 'zen_' automatically. So, I added this myself in the sql file (just use search and replace tool). I also deleted the previous imported FAQ tables before I imported them again so that duplicate error would not appear. You can paste the following sql to your myadmin once you are ready. (broken line is not included). Good luck!

I think it is because your original shop database hasn't got 'zen_' prefix. In this case, you need to delete 'zen_' prefix in the sql file, then import it to your DB again. Besides 10 new faq tables are added (i believe they are in your DB already), two old zc shop tables are affected (new entries are inserted), one is zen_configuration_group, the other is zen_configuration (note: you may not have 'zen_' prefix). When you import the sql, if there is a duplicate error, go to the table, find these new entries and delete them, then try the sql again. (make sure the entries you delete are FAQ related, not others)

Because this faq sql only add new tables or entries, it will not affect your existing shop operation.

No error for duplicates. I removed zen_ from the file enitrely.

the mod works fine except 1 thing.... the main page is pulled on all category (that do not contain product listing) pages. The only way to stop it seems to be removing the faq_application_top.php in open-operations folder.

BTW Hizen your shop seems to have the same issue. Although it's not a major concern since you only have 1 text line there. For me it cannot work because i have more content on the main page :no:

I can see the problem now. That's very strange, the status doesn't change even I changed the value of FAQ 'Categories with 0 FAQs Status' in both zen admin 'extras->faq manager' and in db.

Well I noticed the original sql doesn't have the zen prefix which solved that problem.

I cleaned out all faq related from DB and cut and pasted the orignal sql in.

No errors importing that sql.

There are warnings in faq_types_to_faq_category No index defined!

I can't make a faq or category with getting fatal error of undefined functions. Fatal error: Call to undefined function zen_get_faq_path()

I have the same warning message in my db. However, it doesn't seem to cause some problems for me, or perhaps I haven't noticed them.

For undefined functions, check if you have uploaded all the files, and if you have done the 2nd step in the readme file, some codes need to be added to includes/applicatio_top.php

All the files were there I went through it several times. Errors everytime.

i too cant find the text...i originally asked about it last year around june...now i know it's not a revenue generator for you guys but please zencart is a revenue generator for you, and many of us contribute to the development of it...so can you please tidy this contribution?

i know when i asked about it the answer i got was ''sorry, its not a ticket item so we wont be putting it high on the priority list, but we should have it fixed shortly''- that was about august 2006.

another thing that this atually does is serve as visibility for your company, and an opportunity to correlate your name with a quality module...which in turn increases the chance of getting seen..

so i think theres some real reasons why pefrfect design should address this issue- more than just as a ''nice thing to do''..although let it be said that many of us do actually contribute with no commercial link or thought of financial gain.

is the above fix going to actually arrive guys?

the community needs to know, otherwise please do the right thing and ask zencart to remove it from the module downloads...as you can see it is costing people time and effort as it is.

We, nor anyone else is obligated to develop anything for free, we do it as a contribution to the community.

This contribution was originally developed by Dave at Open operations, we merely took it and fixed alot of bugs to get it working on a clients site, which again was a few years ago.

We are very busy and are trying our best, but we will not drop our paid work to develop a free peice of software or module. This is suppose to be a community and i fail to believe that everyone using this contrib that no one can help and fix a few of the minor problems.

If you take the poll manager or testimonials manager they have been updated by users of this forum and this community, which is good because thats the way open source and the GNU/GPL licence is suppose to work. Although i know there are others that took these modules and are now selling them as their own work.

Under no circumstances are we liable to fix anything for anyone for free, more so its kind of hard to fix a bug that everyone notices but no tells us what page this error appears, are we suppose to go through the code and hope we find the problem?

you said you were told ''sorry, its not a ticket item so we wont be putting it high on the priority list, but we should have it fixed shortly'', who exactly said that? it certainly wasn't us.

You also said "please do the right thing and ask zencart to remove it from the module downloads...as you can see it is costing people time and effort as it is.", this contribution work perfectly on our systems and we haven't come across any bugs so far, but we have removed alot of redundant code and i know there are others that also have it working fine, so why would we ask for it to be removed??

Alot of software have bugs and need updated, if we were charging for this module i'm sure we would make it more of a priority to update it, but we don't so it isn't.

If you require custom coding then ask a developer to fix the problems now? or why don't you use one of the other FAQ contributions, or why don't you do what i personally did and learn the code, which does take time and effort and ultimately cost, but we are certainly reaping the benefit.

or even better, get involved with the project, donate towards its development and also you may want to tell us where this problem exists so we can guide you with what to do.

The module is there its up to each individual to assess which one is best for their needs, if this one doesn't work for you then bin it and use another.

I'll say it again, we are trying to upgrade the contrib but we are very busy and we need to pay the bills so i'm not sure when we can release it, in the meantime as the community for help.

Derek, the contrib doesnt waork- as attested by this thread..thats why it should be removed. you yourself have posted the issue on this very thread..and there seems no fix.

rather than a great big defensive response to what i think were fair comments (ps it was you or one of your staff that told me about the ''priorities''...almost certain it was you actually) , just a fix or remove it...simple as that.

no need to go on and on about contribs and other's taking your work...

you are making $ on zencart itself so my thoughts are that you ARE obliged to either contribute by way of programming or donations. But that is purely on moral grounds.

all i ask is if you commit to something, see it through. its very frustrating and can only do your business harm to see that what you say doesnt match up with what you do. Like i said, its also free advertising...so in many ways is much more of a ''paying'' effort than you might think.

This contrib is the result of open operations, all we did is merely fixed a few bugs to get it working for one of our clients, it was already released by open operations before we even touched it.

We are no way obliged to do anything for anyone for free and i'm sure you also wouldn't want to work for free, we all have our bills to pay, and quite frankly i'm not interested in developing a program for free when i need to feed my kids.

I will not be doing any further development on this contrib until we have time, however being a very busy company goodness knows when that will be.

As for removing the contrib, if the guys at zencart want to do that then fine, but it will always be available from our site. I mean the contrib is there for those who wish to use it since it does work and there are many using it as we speak, i really am not that interested if you or anyone else uses it or not, its not our original work and we do not need to stand by it, but we are more than happy for others to download and use it if they so wish.

Yes thats right as a development company who uses zencart we will be making $$ off the back of this great software package, just like many others, although i personally have been a long member of these forums and USED to help out alot in the past but because we are good at what we do we are too busy now, is that good or bad, well i need to feed my family so it must be good.

I don't understand how you can say that we are not a committed company that supports their work, go to our site and read the testimonials submitted by our clients, what do they say??

As i said this contrib was NOT our original work, we only fixed a few bugs to get it working for a client a few years back and then released it again as a near working mod.

Open Operations had a great idea there but failed to deliver and we are currently working on this contrib on a clients site to clean up the code, fix bugs and remove the redundant stuff, but again who knows when that will be done.

So what issue are you talking about? I already asked in my last reply to provide details.

For those that are interested we will be releasing a help desk manager soon!

We deal mainly in open source software thats released under the GNU/GPL licence, you should give it a read its quite interesting. The problem we as a company have experienced in the past and continue to do so is alot of people that use these softwares expect to get free support, free development and as you keep pointing out, the developers have an obligation to fix things.

This clearly is incorrect since its up to the companies or developers whether they provide support or continue to develop the software. i know of many companies that release open source software and only provide paid support because thats where alot of the time and energy is consumed. other companies or collaborative developers like the Zen cart team offer user led forums such as this one where users can help each other to solve problems and report bugs, you'll find that although they accept donations from users of zencart that still does not mean that the team must update the software, although in most cases they do, which generally results in some sort of payment whether it be donations or otherwise.

I have always stated that we are prepared to update the module since it would and is useful for our own clients, but as i keep stating we need to try and find the time to do this over and above our day jobs, but just because we released an updated copy of somone elses module that doesn't mean that we are obligated to fix the problems, there is no reason that any other developer on this forum can help.

Anyway enough said, i think your original post could have been worded slightly better, i mean the time i've spent time writing these posts could have been better spent solving the problem.

I know that the problem is stated above but as i said before i refuse to search through everyfile to find out where the problem exists, so tell me the page that you are trying to access, then i can look at the code on the page, otherwise we will be going around in circles.

This line of code does NOT exist in this contribution, i have installed this module 3 times on a fresh system and did not see this problem, which seems to exists within the module. We also done a complete search & replace on all the files for this peice of code which returned no results.

So you ask where do you go from here?

Well, try turning off all the other modules to the side where the faq manager module is currently sitting and then we can see what the conflicting module is.

What does this mean?

This means there is another module within zencart thats conflicting with the faq categories module, once we can figure this out i'll recode the module to stop that happening, until that happens nothing can be done.

BTW Tim, i asked in a previous message for you to tell me where the error was showing, i.e. what page, you never replied, so you never got an answer!

The reason i can provide this answer is because i was contacted by a user who respects the fact that this is a FREE unpaid for module that comes as is and is not supported by us, remember we never developed this god damn module we only amended it for our own needs then released it so don't start slandering our company or making us feel like all these problems MUST be fixed by us because they certainly do not and by posting the way you do i'm surpised you get any help.

Read our testimonials, speak to our clients, see what other mods we have helped create or fix, what exactly have you done except moan?

Firstly to ask for help thats completely fine, as i said in many messages on this post read the testimonials on our site (which are submitted by real clients), ask our customers, our support is second to none when its our products and services we are supporting. We DID NOT develop this mod we merely sorted the problems. We installed this mod three times on a fresh Zencart install and DID NOT see the problem.

Secondly i am defending our position as a company since it seemed you were preparing to slander it just because we couldn't help strait away with a problem.

We receive loads of support emails everyday regarding software that we developed and release under the GNU/GPL and granted although they are all configuration requests it does take time to get through them all (this is all unpaid work), but again we will always support or software and services when we develop them.

The only person thats whining in this thread Tim is you, i am merely trying to get through to you that no one that releases free software under the GNU/GPL l;icence is actually obliged to support it, take microsoft for instance with the IE brwser for a MAC, they don't support it anymore, so being a MAC user should i contact Bill Gates and go crazy and demand that they support it? I think not.

I never ever said that i/we are the best thing since sliced bread, i myself asked for some support the other day which was kindly supported by Ajeh, (thanks btw ;-)) and although my problem wasn't solved i'm not going to start jumping up and down about it or start submitting posts like these to get a point across.

Clearly you are not a developer and have never experienceed what we have when using free software.

I have been contacted by another user this morning and this issue has now been taken to the next level as described in the post above that actually relates to the problem, once i get feedback i'lll gladly help.

However, that being said, we are a very, very busy company which is why we have been unable to contribute lately although i will make this issue a priority, so i can stop wasting my own time writing posts like this.

Tim, I have read this thread through from start to end. It seems these posts are pointless and you are out for an arguement with a developer who has offered their work up for nothing.

Are you not making money out of zencart also by selling products and utilising the free software? Are we not all doing this? Why then should a developer who has taken time to learn skills not be able to make money out of zencart by working for others, and also pick and choose the work they do due to timescales etc.

Problem with open source software is that we can receive wonderful and powerful features and software which is being handed to us on a plate for no cost.
The issue then becomes that we all expect more free feautres and further expansions to our website and more and more assistance for free. You would not get this in a commercial software enviroment, instead you would have to pay heavily for any support or personal assistance.

I have asked alot of questions on these forums and had some really good assistance, I have also communicated with developers and had to put my hand in my pocket to pay for things to be fixed for me.

We have to take our hat off to developers who offer their work for future use and development , even if it does not really work correctly at the time.. because someone else with applicable skills might be able to then make it into something better.

I can understand both sides of your discussions...... it is a shame you need to argue over this.
Why not offer to pay a developer to iron out the bugs of this component?? After all, if your car breaks down you need to pay a mechanic to fix it?

Just my two cents on this from reading your threads...., dont go replying with an arguementitive reply to this post because I am not going to follow this thread but think the forums should be about good discussions... but not a slanging match at others.

Or higher someone to take the contribution and fix it for you ... and consider re-contributing it for others to use ...

If it doesn't work for you and you cannot code or cannot afford to hire someone to make it work for you then remove it ...

This line of code doesn't actually exist within this contribution, but i have seen myself with another users site that it seems to cause a problem when the sidebox is active, which tells me there is a conflict in the sidebox code, but we need to find out which box it is.

I personally installed the contribution on 3 seperate sites this week on 3 new installs and never seen this error anywhere on any of the sites, so it kind of beats me now, so i now need to wait to find out from other users where the conflict exists.

If you foind the error or anyone else for that matter please let us know which modules you have installed, this will help us narrow down the problem.

Hi Andrew,

Yeah this is the original FAQ manager contrib from Dave @ Open Operations, i helped sort a few bugs to get it actually working, which it does for most but not for some, but i'm not sure why.

I have tested on 1.3X including the latest release of Zencart and all is fine. it seems that some people get this error where the sql query is trying to select the p.products_date_added where clearly that doesn't exist and it should be referencing the p.faqs_date_added, but again this p.products_date_added doesn't exist within this contrib.

However, since Dave based this contrib on the zencart site products and amended tables and code to accommodate for FAQS as opposed to products, that would tell me that the FAQ categories side box is conflicting with another sidebox, since this is where the problem seems to occur.

I'm kind of stumped since i never see this problem even on a new install with all sideboxes activated and no one else seems to report that they got it working.

So i'll wait and see if either there is a solution or even an explanation would be good.

OK, I think I figured out why I kept getting the p.products error in the sidebox. I had expanded catagory mod loaded and once I removed that I didn't get that error anymore.

BUT, every time I reload the SQL patch for faq manager and enable the sidebox I get this message below. The odd thing is, and I know almost nothing about coding yet (but I am learning as fast as I can!), when I go to the store after loading the SQL patch and enabling the faq sidebox everything is normal. Then when I click on anything on the page I get the following errors and they then won't go away for any page unless I restore my SQL database to an earlier time and thus remove the faq patch.

The first error message appears in the main body of the store under the header, and all of the text is really big, even the store's text:

When I remove the faq SQL patch by restoring to an earlier database all of these go away.

I disabled all of the sideboxes on the left side except for faq manager and that didn't help.

I have heavily modded the store, I'm new to this and have been trying out the various mods to see what I want to use for our store. I have:

Ok so the problems you are having now are relating to your configuration, it seems the database entries have not loaded properly.

The url is http://www.customdrumshop.com/zen I know that the layout is screwed up somewhat with the search box in a un-aligned spot etc. I am still messing around to get a feel for what does what and haven't focused on the CSS or any layout options yet, so don't laugh too hard. :laugh: Unless something is causing the problem?

I just installed the faq SQL patch again so you can see what is happening and now when you go to the faq page by clicking on the link the error message in the main body of the page is:

The other errors above the headers are there, too. Then when I go back to the home page I get the other errors that I mentioned in the last post.

I hope that this will help figure it out. I just installed a fresh 1.3.7 on my home computer after going through the setup in the new zen cart book, so I will try to install the faq manager on it and see what happens. I'll let you know the results.

It looks to me that those errors are present as a result of those variables being missing from the database, have you used an older database with new files?

Try installing a fresh copy of the site using a new database, then install the faq manager, it shoulfd all work fine.

I'm not sure what you mean by using an older database with new files? My server offers zen cart and it installs with Fantastico, there were other databases on the server before adding zen, if that's what you mean.

How do I clear this error for my FAQ manager I have installed all the file into the right folders, but when Iturn on the sidebox I am getting the following error.


Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: faq_category_tree in /home/divabou/public_html/Catalog/includes/modules/sideboxes/faq_categories.php on line 22

Looks like you haven't followed the instructions fully, you need to add the extra code to your application top, you'll find the code within the instructions.

If my site gets really quiet tonight I'll turn off the other sideboxes and see if it makes a difference.

I was contacted by another user only last week and once i asked him to switch off all the sideboxes he did and the module worked, then when he switch them all back on and tried moving the module to the right it also worked, so as i said before, this is a clear indication that there must be interference between this module and another module already installed, i can only imagine that its maybe one that isn't default to zencart as in a custom mod since i installed this contrib fine on three seperate sites.

Yes i agree with this too, although i also do not have time.

This is a contribution for the community if someone else wants to do it thats great, it was Dave at Open Operations that originally developed it so i would also think that it's fair to leave some form of mention to Dave on there, and since this is also the way of the GNU/GPL licence.

I followed the instructions for the installation but now all of my templates buttons are gone. It appears that all the links are looking for the right images but each has the word _image_ placed in the middle of the button name.

For example:
button_login.gif is not being found
My site is looking for button_image_login.gif now.

I am sure it had to do with the sql install errors. Is there a fix for duplicate query errors? I looked through this thread but had a hard time finding my answer. Or is there a command I can send through my database to change the links back to looking for images without the _image_ in the names?

Currently the entire of the FAQ manager works until I add categories and/or FAQs

When I add FAQs or categories everything below the header disappears and I get the following error message.

However I DO NOT have faq manager installed or a SQL patch.

I got my error messages after installing the Royal mail mod and adding products.

Have disabled the mail mod but still getting message.

Any ideas

However if you look at my faqs pages everything is at the bottom of the page, is this how it is suppose to look and also you have to click on the first question and the second question to get the answer. I just installed this MOD tonight, and did a few test that all went O.K. (knock on wood). Is there any more documentation than the Readme File? If there is where can I find it?
