I am going through the setup on this book for a local server but having some problems.
I am on pg 41 and trying to add users to Mercury. I get all of it entered in and press ok, but nothing happens.
Is there a step left out, anyone else have this problem here?
Re-start all the required services in XAMPP. If that does not work, re-start the computer. This problem occurs randomly on computers with different configurations.
I have done both of these and have the same problem.... and when I initiated mercury, and sent the test email, I got an error - message not sent. every timeI initiate xampp, I have to manually start mercury.Quote:

I think I have it figured out...... someone might mention to the author of the manual that they way the book is wirded, it appears that the admin,postmaster and newuser should already be there. I was trying to add these in since they were not, but upon reflection, I think these will be added by thunderbird. (page 41, "creating test eMAil accounts, direction set 3)Quote:

I am not trying to slam the book, it seems very well laid out, just couple hitches...... might have made the same mistake if I had been using for a while and tried to write a book from the persective of a new user.
Apparently, this problem crops up randomly on certain configurations of Windows. In most cases, a restart of XAMPP or the PC after installation is all that is required. However, in other cases, the restart doesn't solve the problem at all ...
This problem might be caused by a corrupted user database within Mercury. I am still working on this issue and have tested it on 3 different PCs running Windows XP SP 2 with no prior XAMPP installed and still have not run into this problem... I am currently waiting for my copy of Windows Vista to be delivered so I can run a test to see if the problem can be reproduced to aid in my analysis.
As for the admin,postmaster and newuser user accounts, they should already be there immediately in Mercury after XAMPP is installed. You shouldn't have to manually add those accounts. These accounts are also not added by Thunderbird.

Your book is great, I am still working through it as it is a lot to go through, but its great.
It is not your fault about software, it just seems to happen. If I do an uninstall, does it get everything off or like some software does it leave a little here and there? I would like to try a restart as I think I didn't restart after I installed it.

If you would like to perform a re-installation on your machine, try it with these conditions this time round:
- Uninstall XAMPP and restart your PC.
- Ensure you have Administrator access to your Windows XP system.
- Disconnect your network cable or network card. Then disable your firewall.
- Install XAMPP into a directory without space (e.g. C:\xampp) but do not start the services.
- Re-start your PC.
- Start up XAMPP Control Panel and then start the Mercury Mail service.
- Open up the Mercury Mail admin interface and check that the default users are there.
Whether the re-installation is successful or not, remember to re-enable your firewall after testing.
Let me know if the above steps work.

One more thing...is WAMP a bad option for this. Not sure if it has Mercury as I am taking a class and I have to use this, well don't have to but its recommended
The bad news: Both your file contents are different from mine ...
The good news: Both your files are different from mine in exactly the same place. At least that gives me a lead. Might need more log files to do the troubleshooting.
Will run some more tests and keep you posted.
Don't think there's a mail server bundled with WAMP...
Depending on which version of WAMP you are using, you need to make sure the Apache, MySQL and PHP versions are compatible with Zen Cart.
ok, well it looks like you know where the problem is or a start, I will just hold out until you find more, thanks for the hard work.
I have the same book by Goh which I would be lost without I never realised there was so much involved. Al was ging well and I was starting to think it was going to be easy then I got stuck at page 41.
I think the problem was that I was trying to use the 'Username' 'Personal Name' and 'password' from page 389 as instructed in the book. Mercury won't accept the usernames though as it wont except usernames over 16 characters long so I left off the @example.com parts of the usernames and they all added fine. I hope this helps.
Quick caution note. I am now stuck on page 45 my thunderbird email accounts added won't work keep getting mail.example server 'username or password incorrect'. Not being a PC expert I am don't know what the problem is, the lines I have followed are so far are: was it because I shortened the username in mercury (which I doubt). Or was it the Configuring Mercury on page 38.Told to Edit /MercuryMail/Mercury.INI with:
myname example.com # Canonical name for this server
and add:
example.com : example.com
But:
There are two mercury.INI files in Mercury mail with almost identical coding in.
I have tried just changing one, then just the other and then both. I still cant send an email in thunderbird from any of my test accounts to the others.

Hi Craig, sorry for the errors in the book, I have posted fixes for them on the Book Support Site.
For the .ini files, you should only edit MERCURY.INI and not MERCURY_EXAMPLE.INI.
I see nothing wrong with your configuration so far. But maybe you can check the local domain you have configured is similar to that on pg 37. You may have to restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
Try it and let me know. If that still doesn't help, can you let me know your Windows OS version?

As for the book no apologies needed now I know what is involved I can't believe I even contemplated doing it without the book, I wouldn't have stood a chance. I think it will encourage alot of people like me who are not PC experts to have a go, which is great but will probably mean alot of question answering for you.

I have made sure only the Mercury.INI file is the one edited.
I have checked that my C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts has the correct lines added as page 37(it has).
My test email on page 38 goes OK.
Actually everything appears Ok until I try to add local users to Thunderbird at the end when asked to add password I get:
'sending the password did not succeed. Mail server mail.example.com responded:Username or password incorrect'
I have noticed that I can only use www.example.com in my browser www.localhost.com isn't working and my OS is windows XP version 2002 if that is any help.

Try this:
In your Thunderbird program, look up the Account Settings for the mail user with the login problem. You can do this with a right-click on the account and then choosing Properties from the context menu.
Under Server Settings, make sure the User Name field does not have a domain. For example, it should read storekeeper instead of [email protected].
PS: "www.localhost.com" won't work, only "localhost" or "www.example.com" will work.

I have tried adding the accounts again but even though my password is set in mercury to password and all my settings at the end of adding an account read as yours do under the 'Congratulations' screenshot on page 45, I am receiving the same message that the mail server is saying 'username or password incorrect'. Can you think of anything else I can try or is there any more information you need from me?

Thank you to the people who have given me help with this problem I have a solution so thought I'd post the solution in case it helps anyone else. To recap when asked for password after adding a new a/c in Thunderbird I got the message 'username or password incorrect'.
A friend with far more smarts than me looked at a number of reasons this may happen and found the reason for the problem and the solution:
My PC belives my port 110 to be being used by another server (to my knowledge it isn't so may be a glitch??). Anyway if you have the same problem and have tried everything else. Try:
-Going into mercury admin
-Select 'Configuration' from top menu
-Select 'Mercury POP3 service'
You will see listen on TCP port 110 change to:
-Listen on TCP port 1100 (i.e. add extra 0)
Now in Thunderbird add a/cs as per the manual.
-Cancel the password error
-You wil see the a/c name still appears in the left panel
-Right click on it
-select 'properties'
-then select 'server settings' under that new a/c name
-Also change that from port 110 to 1100
-uncheck ckeck for messages every 10 mins.
Now stop and restart mercury and thunderbird for the changes to take effect. click on an a/c in thunderbird you have added and when asked for the password fingers crossed it will work.
I hope I have explained this correctly, good luck.
If you want to know exactly which ports are in use in your system, type netstat at a command line.
If you follow that with "space"/? you will get all the available switches.

When you say 'at a command line' do you mean in the console window? So I would 'start', 'run' and then in the appearing window write your commands?
One thing that my teething troubles have highlighted is that my PC skills need to be rapidly and vastly improved.
