Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hello,
Newbie Zenner here. Just plunked down almost $50 for the book, and am already completely lost. Unfortunately, the book only has instructions for installing a local server on Windows.
I'm running 10.3.9 and downloaded XAMPP 0.4. Is this the correct version. If not, where do I find the right one?
In any case, I installed it, and have no clue how to even get it going. Does this involve using the terminal? Have never used this, and have already spent well over an hour trying to figure it out. I am not a programmer or developer. I'm also not an idiot, but already feeling like one.
Can anyone help?

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hello mring, if you're on Tiger, you can try the latest XAMPP for MacOS X (Tiger) or MAMP. However, both do not come with a local mail server.
Since you are running 10.3.9 (Panther) and most probably on a non-Intel Mac, you may run into problems setting things up properly. I'll see what I can do for you in this case.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Thanks so much. Yes, I am running Panther (non Intel). Got very frustrated with XAMPP last night and dumped the whole thing. Started fresh with MAMP instead (v. 1.4) because I read that that might be easier. Seemed to get it installed okay. But still no idea how to use it or where to go from there.
Is this a better way to go? It still seems way beyond my scope. Would I be better off forgoing the local host and going straight to remote?

See my email to you and let's work out how best to move forward on the problems you've encountered so far.

Why not continue to work it out here in the forum, so others can learn too? Or at least post a summary of the process.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
I'd also be interested to hear if you manage to get MAMP to work (properly) with zen 1.3.7.
Both the 1.4 (PPC) and the 1.6 (Universal Binary) versions install and seem to run Ok on my Mac (10.4.8), but put a (working) zen shop copy into the htdocs folder and load up the database and the following happens:
1. All prices in the shop show as zero ('0') (all prices show correctly in admin).
2. No currency signs (£) show before prices in shop.
3. The shop currency selector defaults to US (even though GBP is the default) and can't be changed.
4. Permissions on includes/configure.php need to be set to 444 to avoid the warnings (admin side is Ok at 644 though for some reason).
Tried it with both PHP 4.x.x and PHP 5.x.x in the MAMP control panel. MAMP 1.6 is using MySQL 5.0.37 - wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Interesting to see if the same happens on your system.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hi Rob, it's a long drawn out process and so I thought it would be better to solve her problems first and then post a summary here after that.
In this way, readers of this thread will not have to spend too much time scrolling through too many pages just to learn how we sorted out some of the issues . With the short summary of the process as a baseline, other readers of this thread can then join in and make the discussion more fruitful.

Hi Pixxi, may I know your machine configuration i.e. OS X (Tiger), 512MB RAM, etc?

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hi Pixxi,
I have MAMP and Zen 1.3.7 working on my iMac Intel Core 2 Dual running OS X 10.4.9. I didn't do anything special, just installed MAMP according to their directions amd then did the Zen install, also according to directions.
I was susggesting that the issues the OP was having be worked out here on the forum because I wanted to see what problems arose in 10.3.x or on a non-Intel Mac.
I see you're running 10.4.8, so maybe the difference is the Intel processor. What model Mac are you trying to run this on?

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Actually (having just looked ...) it's 10.4.9 on a G5 PPC with 1.5Gb, although I can't see the specs being the problem (unless it's the upgrade to 10.4.9 somehow - yet yours is working on 10.4.9).
Can't see the PPC/Intel difference being a cause either, since it happens with both v1.4 (PPC) and v1.6 (UB) versions of MAMP.
I had the previous version of MAMP running fine with a test copy of a production zen shop a few months ago - that would be an earlier version of OSX of course.
Odd error - almost as if the shop side isn't writing/retrieving the prices and the currency setting to/from the database properly. Yet the admin side retrieves/displays the prices fine, and the rest of the shop seems to retrieve data fine.
It's not a problem - I have another PHP/MySQL/Apache install that I use for my test server (running separately on the standard Apache/MySQL ports). Just interested to see if anyone else sees the same thing.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Just an update on mring's problems in case anyone is wondering about the status of her MAMP setup.
mring is running Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) on a non-Intel Mac.
For her version of Mac OS X, the highest version of MAMP that will work is 1.3.1. Later versions of MAMP prevented Apache from starting up.
As a precaution during setup, Mac OS X's Personal Web Sharing was also turned off. Installation of Zen Cart 1.3.7 went smoothly after that.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hi Pixxi,
I'm not sure if your problem might be more the result of a misconfiguration of your currency settings. Maybe you can re-check those settings.
You also mentioned running a test copy of a production shop on your local machine so some settings might not match your local setup. Try installing a new Zen Cart store on your local MAMP installation and see if the currency issue crops up again.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hi, I just succeed on installing XAMPP. I'm quite a newbie. Where do I put the sample zencart shop on my HD? Into the same xampp folder?... or elsewhere ...?
And also: to test the zen sample shop do I need to create a brand new mysql database or may I use xampp as it is? I've found instructions on doing it on an ext server but I don't understand how to proceed on local mac with xampp.
The machine is iMac 2.0 intel with 10.4.9 running OS
thanks a lot

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
I am having the same problem. I am completely lost. I have downloaded the Xammp for OS X (I have a new Intel IMac) and it is now telling me to run commands in a terminal. I have no idea what that means. I bought the book under the assumption a that a newbie would be able to just follow the instructions and get set up, but clearly this is WAY over my head....help???

Just reporting back for anyone who may come across a similar problem ...
The cause was a corruption somewhere amongst the files of the shop I had installed - couldn't find what it was, so installed again from a backup and it works fine with MAMP so far.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
I'm having difficulties getting the zc_install to start up on my local server.
I've successfully installed MAMP and placed the contents of zen-cart v.1.3.7 in the htdocs folder. When I follow the path //localhost/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/zc_install I get "Not Found ... The requested URL /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/zc_install was not found on this server."
I've been at this all day, reading all throughout this forum and I'm stumped!
Any suggestions?

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Thanks Pixxi, that works!
I also realized I was running two Apaches and not activating the one on MAMP so the first time I tried the link it didn't work.
I guess n0ow the 'real' fun begins!:D

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Has this issue now been resolved?
If so I'd be very gratefull if anyone has a clear step guide on how to get this lovely looking Zen Cart to work for us poor old Mac users :frusty:
I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.10 on an Intel Based iMac. And I'm using Dreamweaver 8 to handle my web affairs.
The problem seems to be Error code: -12263 to do with an SSL issue which states the filenames are too long.
I know this is a possible problem with MAc OSX users.
Would MAMP resolve this problem?
Thanks.

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Never had a problem with long file names - at what point do you get the error?
What are you using to unzip the zen cart archive file after downloading it?
-
Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
The Zen Cart file is intact and has loaded seemlessly onto my webserver.
And I've managed to change the suggested permissions ok.
But in the Zen instructions "Before Running the Installer" it says you should have the https root ready at hand.
When I test the https root it gives the Error code: -12263 stating that it can't establish a secure conection to the server.

If you haven't set up SSL support on your MAC webserver, then you'll not be able to use SSL at this point.
If this is only for testing or development, you probably don't need SSL anyway, so you can just leave the SSL settings off for the time being.
-
Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Are you installing zen cart on your local Mac, or on a server?
If you're trying to run zen on your Mac (hence your reference to MAMP maybe) you won't get SSL to work easily, and you don't really need to - leave it turned off while you develop and test on your Mac.
You can turn it back on in the config files when you move your shop to a server.
-
Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
Hi
The instructions came with the unzipped software. I downloaded "zen-cart-v1.3.7.1-full-patched-07052007" and the folder "docs"contains 28 files. One of which is "1.readme_installation.html"
Thanks for the tip about leaving out the SSL settings for now. This is what I'll do to test & dev the package and sort the nitty gritty out later.
Cheers

No, I went straight to the server for installation. And when I open the shop page on the remote site it comes up ok.
But for now I'll take DrBytes advice and leave off SSL until it's really needed.
Thanks

Re: Installed server on a Mac. Now how do I use it??
The installation instructions for the next version have been updated to clarify that SSL is typically not required when testing on a local computer.
