how to create a button on product listing page that links back to categories page?

Can anybody tell me how to create a button on a subcategories product listing page that links back to it's categories indexpage

Just a link to the top level category, anyone?

If you have breadcrumbs running, you wouldnt need to, as the user can navigate from there.
