Hello,
I have always used flat rate shipping up to a certain dollar amount which once that amount is reached changes to free shipping. I have now taken on some over weight items that cost a'lot more to ship is there a way to make my shipping calculate a certain amount extra for shipping a higher weight item and if so how do I set this up in the admin while keeping my flat rate and free shipping option.

The simplest way is to create an ATTRIBUTE that is REQUIRED, and to attach this to products where there is a shipping surcharge because of their weight. Simply add a PRICE component to the attribute, and by making it REQUIRED, the customer will have no option but to select it before they can check out.
