I want to offer a free document download but it is making people checkout as normal (using paypal). How can I stop this?Is there a way of putting in the download link (not the item url - or is it?)

Make sure that the Download Product that is Free is NOT marked as:
Always Free Shipping
Virtual Product
Downloads are NOT Always Free Shipping
Downloads are NOT Virtual Products
Downloads know when they are free shipping and do not need the help and this will cause a problem ...
If this is the ONLY product in the shopping cart you should NOT see the checkout_shipping page ...
Not marked as you say - still takes me to checkout page. Am I missing something is there something I need to indicate it is a download for example?
OK reuploading and resetting various parameters. I think it didn't work because Iwas using one of the template examples which set it as a linked product. This might have been interfering with it.
Don't really understand how downloads work... is there a step by step somewhere? Don't want to send people off site.
Zen Cart currently allows customers to get free downloads if they add the item to their cart and go through checkout. There will be no charge, but they do have to complete checkout. Their downloads will be accessible via their My Account section or on the order-confirmation screen.
If you want to bypass checkout, just put a direct URL link for the file into your product description and they can download it that way.
