Sidebox to refine search results, similar to Manufacturer's sidebox?

Greetings, everyone.

My goal is to create a series of sideboxes that will allow the user to refine the category view by attribute.

For example, say i'm in the Men's shoes category, and I want to narrow all the products down to the color Brown and also only dress shoes. I need the user to be able to do this from the main Men's shoes category, and also in Men's shoe size 9.5 subcategory.

It's basically going to be a custom sidebox for each attribute.

I have searched both the forum and contributions, but haven't been able to find anything similar to this. Does anyone have any ideas for this?

I realize this is an old post, but for those who may stumble across this in the future, you can turn on the side box for Manufacturers in the Tools > Layout Boxes Controller. Once this is saved, you can then view the manufacturers in the main store (on the left side by default). When you click on one of the Mfr's in the list, it should then load up ALL products that have been linked to that specific Mfr.
