Ok, so I tried installing that plugin but it isn't generating any errors. So then I tried uploading a backup of the site I'd made a couple weeks ago and I'm still having the problem.

Yea, I know, but the person I'm helping with the site doesn't want subcategories to show at all in the sidebar so that shouldn't be a problem.
