Figured it out:

bottom_header.gif is a fixed width and therefore will not widen along with the window resizing. So I can either remove the gif or set a fixed width of 907px to all the other...

Tried that and it only widened the borders on the "home" link section of the footer. I currently have that setting active with this post.

Forgot to mention I am using IE8. Didn't try it with others.

The overall footer width...It stays constant while the rest (header and main) will resize with the window width.

recehecked all the security patches and they are good. I can still add/edit products. Only when i edit a member or try to change the site under admin/configuration. Takes me back to the admin index...

For some strange reason I can no longer apply any updates or changes to my store from admin. I enter the change/edit, click update and it takes me back to the admin index.
