You can do that by going in your domain registrar and changing the DNS nameservers in there. Who is your registrar?

I had a similar situation as yours, but have fixed this issue recently. Did you make sure that your DNS is set correctly after changing your addon domain to the primary domain?

Don't ever use fantastico to upgrade your site, it will break your site.

I'd just go for the upgrade. If your too busy to do the upgrade, you can have your host do it for you. And if the upgrade fails, you can always revert back to the previous database.
