I was wondering how a customer, if he/she wants to, can cancel their membership. There doesn't seem to be any way - ???
Just removing them from admin is sloppy.
Am I wrong - is there a way they CAN remove themselves?

There is presently no facility for a customer to delete their own account from your store. And you probably don't want them doing that anyway, especially given that their purchase history would then be lost.
If they want to unsubscribe from newsletter mailings, they can control that from their My Account area..
