Product layout unique for each category?

The site I'm working on has one major section with a custom layout. The standard layout tpl has been modified for the major category but each of the other 6 categories has a different layout requirement. How do I create unique product layouts for each category?

Use a different product type for each category - note: you will probably want to clone the product general to do this.

By clone product general do you mean copy the General tpl file?

In the downloads section is the Book Product Type - it has excellent instructions on how to clone (create) a new product type.

As usual I didn't investigate the product type page adequately and now see how to create a new product type.

My second question still needs answering - what is the file that needs copying and modifying that corresponds to the new product type?

There is more than one file - which is why I suggested looking at the book type.

I went to the downloads page at zen-cart.com and searched for Product Type and Book Product Type but I don't see the instructions you are referring to. Can you give me a url?

You will find some versions of this under the "Click here for older contributions" link in Downloads. Also check the support thread for Product Type Book by Moku. There are probably newer versions available through that.

Thanks for the direction Glenn. I think I see the general outline of what needs doing but from Kim's comment it looks like these files are designed for ver. 1.2 and won't work on the ZC 1.3.7 that I am using - true?? In any case there are many files in the archived_product-types/demo_book zipped files and I don't begin to know or understand which ones I need.

Is this workflow I'm looking for too complicated for a php-non-expert like me? Should I be looking for a programmer to assist me?
