Default So, have I got the overrides system figured out?

OK, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Zen Cart because I did not make an override system. Oopsie.

So, I understand the concept that you make a folder with your template name (I have the override structure image thingie found in the downloads section - thank you to whoever made that!!).

So, if I DON'T modify files in a certain folder, I do NOT make a "my template name" folder there? Is that right? I'm not supposed to go through and make custom folders in ALL the possible places if I don't edit everything?

    Thanks!

If you're not changing something, you don't need an override folder or copies of the files.

It doesn't matter, if you haven't edited any files in that folder.

When I install Zencart, I go through and create a CUSTOM (or whatever name I've chosen for the template) folder everywhere there is a 'Classic' folder even if I don't intend to put edited files in them right away (actually, I have made a directory 'tree' with folders in the appropriate places that I just upload).

The way it works is this:

If I have created a template called 'STEVESH' and created all the appropriate override folders, when Zencart goes, say, to create the footer, it will check to see if the folder includes/templates/STEVESH/common exists, and then checks to see if the file tpl_footer.php is in that folder. If it is, Zencart will use that file to create the footer. If it isn't, or if the folder doesn't exist, Zencart will use the tpl_footer.php file in includes/templates/template_default/common.

    Pretty simple, but very powerful.

this post sort of cleared things up for me. but i'm still having a problem getting my manufacturer sidebox to show up (i know, that sounds totally unrelated). i edited manufacturers in the layout boxes controller and turned it on, but it won't show up (and i actually even went in and added manufacturer names).

i see that manufacturers.php is in the ADMIN folder...do i need to edit it directly and then add it to my CUSTOM folder?

also, do i need to have that CUSTOM folder anywhere else except the includes/templates folder? i see instances where the 'classic' folder is also in the includes/languages/ENGLISH/ folder. i followed the tutuorial, but it seems that as i am moving on to change things, i'm missing something.

    i hope i'm making sense.

You should not, in most cases, ever modify anything in the /admin/ folder without explicit instructions to the contrary. Never move/copy a file from /admin/ to the catalog or custom folder, as it won't do anything good there.

You should have a /custom/ folder in /includes/languages/, and you will probably want one in /includes/modules/. I think it's a good idea to start off by making a /custom/ folder everywhere there is a /classic/ folder, as then you know where they are if you ever need them. Just don't duplicate any files unless you are editing them.

I agree with glh421 about creating override folders all at once, but some here think you should only create a override folder when (and where) you need it. Either way works. Everyone agrees you shouldn't move files into those folders until you modify them.

The manufacturers.php file you were looking for is in includes/modules/sideboxes (and it's overridable) , but you shouldn't have to change it to get the sidebox to show. Are you sure you enabled it in Layout Boxes Controller on either the left or right?

    wow. thanks you guys.

i went ahead and clicked the reset button in the layout boxes controller as detailed below cuz i think my sort orders were getting way out of control:

----Reset All Box Sort Order to match DEFAULT Sort Order for Template: cfstyle
This does not remove any of the boxes. It will only reset the current sort order
    Reset-----

here's what it looks like in the control panel for the manuf. element:

    --sideboxes/manufacturers.php ON LEFT 30 20 ON ---

and the result is the same:

    http://www.craftfancy.com/shop

what up? this is just buggin' the ever living crap out of me!

Did you try adding some products with manufactureres and see if the box appears?

There is a configuration setting in the maximum values where:
Manufacturers List - Verify Product Exist
Verify that at least 1 product exists and is active for the manufacturer name to show

Note: When this feature is ON it can produce slower results on sites with a large number of products and/or manufacturers
    0= off 1= on
