Default Require access code to place an order?

Require access code to place an order?

Is there a way with Zen cart (or an add-on) where I can require a person to enter an access code to be able to place an order for a specific product.

One of my products is only available to qualified buyers. I determine if a person is qualified via an application form on my site. I then reply to them via email if they can purchase the product. It is here where I would like to give them a code which will allow the purchase in Zen Cart.

It seems if I can make a coupon code mandatory for a specific product, that would be an easy solution. Im wondering if this can be done or if there may be a better approach.

    Any suggestions appreciated,
    Nick

My recommendation would be to use groups. Put qualified buyers in a special group, and verify group ownership at checkout time if this product is in the cart.

    Thnx for your reply swguy.

I have been trying to understand how to implement your suggestion. Upon exploring Goh Koon Hoek's Zen Cart book, I only find that "groups" are for making discounts for future purchases available for those already signed up with an account. If I create a discount group, I am not sure how to use that to then approve someone to be able to make a product purchase.

I am also not sure what you mean by "verify group ownership" at time of checkout?

Is there something simple I'm missing? - still new at Zen cart.

I also see the "Customer Authorization" option, however it seems to require approval to purchase, browse, etc. for all customers signing up; and it is global, not product specific.

    Any further help appreciated,
    Nick

Another thing that may help clarify my situation. I currently have my cart set so that when a person clicks on a sidebar link about this specific product, it takes them to an external Easypage where I have my info about the product and application form. They fill the form. I then I approve it, and email them back a notice that they can purchase the product. But if I just make the product available on Zen cart with out some type of approval requirement, then a person could skip the application process.

I haven't used it, and am not sure exactly how it works, but you might look at this:

    Thnx stevesh,

The readme for the mod sounds like it may be ideal - I'll explore it more. Seems like I have to install it to see for sure.

I am still open to better understanding swguy's suggestion - if any one can help.

You have to write code to do what I'm suggesting.
