Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Admin > Product Listing > Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

I had thought that is where I could set the order in which products are displayed but apparently not.

Current default setting is to show Products in Alphabetical order.
What I want to do is list by Product ID and in Descending order.

Example

In Category 1 there are 10 products. I want to display starting with Product ID #10 and descending to ID #1.

Anyone know how to do this?

Also, the instructions provided do not make much sense, but maybe it's just me. :smile:

Product Listing Default sort order?

NOTE: Leave Blank for Product Sort Order. Sort the Product Listing in the order you wish for the default display to start in to get the sort order setting. Example: 2a

1= Product Name
2= Model
3= Price, Product Name
4= Price, Model
5= Product Name, Model
6= Product Sort Order

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Well "0" does not work but "6" does and as there are only 10 items at this point you can set the product sort order

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Admin > Product Info > Previous Next - Sort Order

Presuming that is what you are referring to, none of the 6 settings made any difference.

Appreciate the feedback but looks like a bug has been uncovered or I'm still doing something wrong / in the wrong place.

In your product listing, you have certain columns enabled, in a certain order left-to-right.

If your 2nd column is your Product Name, and you set your "Display Product Listing Default Sort Order" to "2a" then it'll sort by Product Name in Ascending order.
If you changed things to have your Product Name in a different column, you'd change the default to use the new number of the column you moved it to.
If you wanted "Descending" instead of Ascending, you'd use a "d" instead of "a".

The available columns for product listing are the first 7 entries in Admin->Configuration->Product Listing. The numbers you enter for each of those are the order from left-to-right in which columns are going to appear. And thus the "Default sort order" switch is controlled by those numbers as well.

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Good insider knowledge DrByte, but doesn't seem to do what I had expected.

Display Product Image = 1
Display Product Name = 2

The other Display Product settings are 0.

I get the following sort order:

2a = Product ID #2 - #3 - #1
2d = Product ID #1 - #3 - #2

What I'm looking for is displaying Product ID 3 - 2 - 1.

That's not currently offered as a configurable option.

But if you leave the Default Sort Order switch blank, then it will sort by the Sort Order you've assigned to the products, followed by the product name.

ie:

Sort Order     Name
    10         Apple
    10         Banana
    20         Avocado
    30         Artichoke

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Maybe I'm just not understanding the concept of the "Display Product Listing Default Sort Order".

If I cannot display by Product ID and in Descending or Ascending order, what is the purpose of that option in the Admin section?

But if you leave the Default Sort Order switch blank, then it will sort by the Sort Order you've assigned to the products, followed by the product name.

How would I do that?

To my knowledge, if I leave the sort order blank then products are listed/displayed Alphabetically.

Yes, after they are sorted by their individual sort orders. (And if all have no sort orders, then they effectively all have the same value: 0 ... meaning that only the secondary alphabetical sort by product name applies.

Website Rob:

How would I do that?

1. Leave Admin->Configuration->Product Listing->"Display Product Listing Default Sort Order" blank.

2. Edit each and every one of your products and give each one a sort order, based on the order in which you want them to show up.

Now whenever they show in a product listing, they will appear in the order of the sort order you supplied for each product. If there is more than one with the same sort order value, then the product name will be the secondary sort, in alphabetical order.

Or if you'd rather write custom code to change how the SQL pulls products from the database, you can do that too.

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

OK, that works. Thanks for the tip.

So what then, is the purpose of the "Display Product Listing Default Sort Order"? Even after giving each product an individual sort order number, I still got the same results as mentioned previously for using 2d or 2a.

It doesn't seem to key on Product ID or Sort Order Number so what then does it key on, in order to determine the Sort Order?

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

The options are to use one of the existing columns (fields) in Ascending (a) or Descending (d) order ...

This can be seen by clicking on the titles themselves to see the "matching code" for you particular settings on your products listing ...

This changes based on the assigned sort order of the fields ...

If you want the assigned sort order of the products to be the default, there isn't a code to enter for the sort order ... the code is to leave the sort order blank as stated in the Product Listing configuration settings:
Display Product Listing Default Sort Order
Product Listing Default sort order?
NOTE: Leave Blank for Product Sort Order. Sort the Product Listing in the order you wish for the default display to start in to get the sort order setting. Example: 2a

Now it will display by the sort order you assigned to each product when viewing the Product Listing ...

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Hi again.
Totally understand all of this thread and have changed lots to make sure I understand it inside out and I do.
The only thing is that when I set the Default Sort order to Price (ascending) it just doesnt work. I know it can be selected to sort this way on the page by the customer which is great but so far i have had 3 people who missed that so a default way would be good.
I'm using 3a as a code. Havent changed any orders from stock.

Thank you ;-)
Nick.

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Eek, more fiddling and I was using the wrong code. I assumed it was taken from the VALUE but its not its the listing top to bottom:

Hope this little table helps to explain to others.

Code TITLE VALUE
1 Display Product Image 1
2 Display Product Manufacturer Name 0
3 Display Product Model 1
4 Display Product Name 2
5 Display Product Price/Add to Cart 3
6 Display Product Quantity 1
7 Display Product Weight
And, as you have said, add an a for ascending and a d for descending.
In my case making 5a
Beautiful, like you zenners ;-)

No, actually it's taken from the column-number across the page when it's displayed.
Since you have non-zero values of "1, 1, 1, 2, 3", your 5th column is the "3", which in your case is the sort-by-price you desired.

Glad you got it working the way you want.

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Eek again.
Do you believe I thought it was that at first but it didnt work? Thats why I came to my top to bottom conclusion and 5 works just great for the price but 3 does zippidy.
Im boxing above my weight here - dont hit me, after all you probably are backing me up but I just dont realise it.
Many thanks for the team taking the time to help everyone here.

Re: Display Product Listing Default Sort Order

Sorry to open this one up again but I just can't get the order sorted.

I want my categories / products to be listed in alphabetical order, going from left to right, but whatever I try to change they go in alphabetical order from right to left. So I want them to be like this:

ABC
DEF
GHI

but they are always coming out like this:

CBA
FED
IHG

Can anyone help with this??

Stuart
