Linked Products Sort Order...

I have two categories that use the same products (linked)...
but the sort order from the first category is affecting the order in the second category.

I don't have unique (sort order) control over each category when products are linked.

I would prefer to keep the products linked, rather than duplicated...
but in this case the sort order for each category is important and I can't compromise.
Is there a way to do this without creating a second (duplicate) product?

Insight would be appreciated.

Have to get crafty with sort order values

try using 10, 20, 30....or 100, 200, 300... in categories and then for others some value that acheives what you want like 11, 12, 22, 33 etc

Hmm, you mean use one format for the first category, then another format for the second category...
which would allow me to "rig" the way the sort order interprets the values.

So the sort order number is literally based of the numeric value...
if I kinda mix and match the values, I can get what I want. Interesting.

Doesn't sound like fun...
but hey, it's better than duplicate products!

If you select it in the admin, options are for product info next listing(you did not provide a link or state which page you are having issue with) is:

Products Display Order by
0= Product ID
1= Product Name
2= Model
3= Price, Product Name
4= Price, Model
5= Product Name, Model
6= Product Sort Order

Yes I know that, I'm using #6...
so I'm defining the importance by number.

The logistics are a bit confusing, but I think I got a handle on it.

Well, it's a year later and I'm trying to get this working again...
I had abandoned the concept back then, but now we have too many products to just let them run free.

The problem I've run into is that ALL linked products get updated no matter which category they're in...
so I can't "get crafty" with the sort order...if I change one, it changes them all.

Can anyone advise? What am I missing?

I don't have any suggestions for the fancy tricks with the sort order numbers. I tried to work it out, but the permutations are just too much for me. I think it would get out of hand really fast.

I also would like to be able to have different sort order numbers assigned for the same item in different categories. Doesn't seem like it works though. I also really need to keep my products as linked, not duplicated (I think - hmm... ).

I would love to see more suggestions on this topic.
