Removing Catagories from the main page

Hi,

I am trying to remove the catagores from the centre box on a site that i am currently developing. I have read the boards and followed the Configuration>Layout Settings>Categories - Always Show on Main Page =0.

(still being repointed atm)

However.... This does remove the catagories from the centre box but also removed the featured products and the new products from the centre as well as the whole of the right hand side boxes.

does anyone have a clue on what i am doing wrong here and how to remove the catagories without removing the other things?

works OK on my site. Have you changed any other files?
