Problems replicating site on local host

Hi, I have a client site that needs to be redesigned, so I wanted to set up a replicated version of the site on my local host. I read quite a few threads here and I was able to make some progress.

I'm using Mamp pro and I was able to backup and export the files from the live site. I created a new database for the local host and imported the database info from the live site. That worked fine, all of the info in the backend reflects that of the live site.

The problem I'm having is with the files from the live site. My local host site has the proper navigation that relates to the live site, the template isn't the same, etc. I know that is bc I haven't moved over the files from the live site to the local host site.

So, my question is, what's the best method to import the files from the live site into the new local host site? Do I need to copy and paste all of the files into the local host folders?

Sorry if i'm not communicating clearly, I'm very much a newbie and i'm surprised that I was even able to get as far as I did with the install. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless the client hard-coded some paths, you should just be able to FTP all the files and folders from the remote site to your local machine, and edit the configure.php files.
