What am I missing here? I am working on configuring Zen Cart in a test environment to see if it is for me or not.
It is really a sweet package and very intuitive right out of the box--at lest until I got to product attributes.
Here is my scenario: I have a product category called Round Crystals and another called Square Crystals. Each category has four products: Small, Med, Large, and X-Large. So my inventory looks something like this:
Item, Model, Price, qty
Small Round Crystal, SJ01, 1.00, 10
Med Round Crystal, SJ02, 2.00, 10
Large Round Crystal, SJ03, 3.00, 10
X-Large Round Crystal, SJ04, 4.00, 10
Small Square Crystal, SJ05, 1.00, 10
Med Square Crystal, SJ06, 2.00, 10
Large Square Crystal, SJ07, 3.00, 10
X-Large Square Crystal, SJ08, 4.00, 10
I created a product for each of these items and they ALL show up in my cart under the appropriate category.
I don’t want them all to show up in my cart I only want to display something like “Round Crystals” when the customers select that item they can then choose small. med, lrg, or x-lrg and it gets priced/weighted accordingly.
I tried using a single product i.e. Round Crystals and attached attributes to it (small, med, lgr, xlgr) and I am able to get the price and the weight right but I lose control of the inventory aspect (my inventory is tracked by the model numbers listed above). But I get confusing (but accurate) information.
For example say a customer wants to order 20 Small Round Crystals: he clicks on “Round Crystals”; he notices that there are 40 in stock so he indicates 20 in the quantity box selects the “small attribute” to get the proper price and weight; clicks the “add to cart button” and gets slammed with an “out of stock” message—of course there are only ten in stock! I don't get it?
Can someone let me know where i missed the boat?
Thanks Tons!
Ken
