Password protect a directory?

Hiya, I posted this in the User Contributed forum but I don't think it's relevant there...

Anyhoo, I need to password protect a directory within my zencart for the Barclays ePDQ module ( /epdq/ directory) and for the life of me I cannot see how to do it. So far I think it needs to be done with .htaccess but the instructions to set it up on my hosts control panel are awful, even the grammar is wrong!! it's a H-Sphere panel.

Any ideas anyone? Can I do it via FTP?

Create a htaccess.txt page and upload via ftp and then rename .htaccess permissions 644.
