sorting categories

for some reason my categories only want to sort by name? how do i sort by type of content?

example:

Multi-Media->
Company Info->

Your options are at

admin > config > layout settings > Categories/Products Display Sort Order > select from:

Categories/Products Display Sort Order
0= Categories/Products Sort Order/Name
1= Categories/Products Name
2= Products Model
3= Products Qty+, Products Name
4= Products Qty-, Products Name
5= Products Price+, Products Name
6= Products Price-, Products Name

Each category can receive a "sort order" value as can each sub-cat under each top cat...

is there a way to change category sort order number after you have created them? or do i have to erase them and redo? what happens if in the future i need to add a new category in the middle of the existing ones and i have a sort order by numbers?

Instead of using sort order numbers like

3

Use

10
20
30

Then you can insert a new one inbetween if necessary
