how to merge (merging modules)?

I have managed to install quite a few modules already but now i want to install image handler 2. a lot of the files when uploaded will be new files but there are some that will overwrite files. in the instructions like many other modules it says where you have altered files to merge the files.

my question is. how do you merge the changes in to your file when you do not actually know which code has been altered and what code has changed because of version number or your own changes. I am using winmerge (and compare it) to compare the files (which shows differences as different colours).

I do not have a record of the changes I have made.

There is also a patch file in IH2, what you do with this I have no idea, it is not in the instructions.

The easiest way to do this is to have a copy of your Zen Cart on your local drive (your computer). This will allow you to use something like WinMerge (a free download) to compare the files and merge the information. You can then FTP the result to your website.

That is what i have been doing. it is guess work for the most part. is there no better way of doing this.
