Home Page centre column content query

I am wanting to change the display in the centre column of the Home Page to display a text string and a graphic.
I am working on a local XAMPP installation of ZC 1.3.8a
I am reasonably familiar with HTML and CSS etc.
I can alter the html in define_main_page to change the text, but have been unable to ascertain exactly how to include an image and where in the site hierarchy the image should be located.
In the example ZC it is located offsite.
I have tried locating it in a local image folder, with the correct local path, as in a static site, but apparantly that is not how it needs to be done in such a database site.
Please put me straight on this.

A standard src= and a hard path will work

Or a relative link with your images in your template /images dir
