Paypal IPN Checkout & GV Error

I'm running v1.3.8a

When a customer checks out with paypal (using a Gift Certificate) it all works properly, but when they return to my site, they are returned to page 2 of the checkout process with a big red warning:

It appears that the amount you have tried to apply and your Gift Certificate balance do not match. Please try again.

The order goes through fine (they get order confirmation, etc) but they are not returned to the checkout success page, and instead they are made to think their order did not go through when it actually did.

Just to double check. when you say new installation, does this mean that, apart from template modification, you have no other contributions installed.

If you do could you let us know which ones.

I've done a clone of the Flat Rate shipping module. And also an editable sidebox contribution, but that's all.

This only happens when a GC is used. I have my debug on, and I don't see any errors in the debug messages (although I can't say that I really know what I'm looking for).

Another question.

When the customer uses a Gift Certificate - are they using it to cover the whole amount or just as a partial payment.

They are redeeming the full amount of the GC, but it only covers part of the total cost (partial payment is still due).

When/if the whole amount is covered by the GC, they don't make their way to paypal, they go right to my checkout_success page.

Just Gift Certificate. There are others that are "installed" but not active.
