Getting category ID in tpl_categories.php

I would like to get the ID of the Product within tpl_categories.php page.

I have tried several options including zen_get_categories function but i got stuck

I hope you could help me regarding this manner :)

Just for general knowledge, I am trying to replace the classic tpl_categories page with <ul>, <li> hierarchy (unsuccessfully at this time .... ).

I have looked over the contributions but I haven't seen one that matches my requirements.

I want each sub category to have its own <ul>.
For example:

<ul>
<li>top category 1</li>
<li>top category 2</li>
<ul>
<li> Sub Category 2></i>
</ul>
<li>top category 3</li>
</ul>

Moreover, I would like to know for general knowledge how I retrieve current category Id from code in tpl_categories.php
