What do you want to happen once you know if they have Acrobat or not?
The site I'm working on has PDF versions of the articles to show how the article looked in the newspaper. I don't have Acrobat at home, so if I click on the link from there, I get a pop up asking if I want to download the PDF. I'd rather have an error message that the user can't view the PDF or (ideally) turn off the link if the user can't view the PDF. I found a javascript online, but I'm not all that sure how it would help me.

I don't know why. I discovered that I didn't when working on the site. I figure I won't do anything about getting it until I have an idea about detecting its existence (or lack of same). It's not the most important thing and it's certainly not a show stopper, but I think it'd be pretty slick.
