shop quantity problem

I recently set up a zen cart shop, so it's all a bit new to me.
Just had a problem a customer ordered two of the same item, there was only one item in stock at the time of the order.

However the order for two was accepted? the shop quantity status went into a -1.

Any idea on why this should happen, have I set something up incorrectly?

Check your settings in the Configuration ... Stock Settings ...

Make sure you are not allowing checkout when there isn't enough in stock ...
