whats_new sidebox won't show up

Hey all, I am trying to get my whats_new sidebox to show up on my page. The layout boxes controller wont affect this, no matter which setting I edit. I have tried all the combinations. The layout boxes controller wont control this box. Please help.

Have you added any products to your catalog?

The New Products box (if that's what you mean) doesn't display unless there are some new products to display.
