Default Local install on XP Pro (Apache and MySql problems)

    Hey guys,

    Please could anyone help!!!??

I have installed XAMPP on to my XP pro computer, Filezilla and Mercury are running lovely with the green "Running" bars however, Apache and MySql don't seem to be doing anything! I briefly had a green "Running" bar next to Apache, but that went off (no idea why, i didn't touch anything!).

I have checked the ports and all are free, also checked the error log thing (<xampp-dir>/apache/logs/error.log) and there is nothing in the logs file, let alone anything about errors!

I'm all a bit new to this, so please excuse me if I am being slow and missing something obvious!

Thanks guys I appreciate your time.

Could you let us know which version of XAMPP and what OS you are running on?

If the file's contents are too long, you can zip it up and post it as an attachment while replying to this thread.

If the contents are not very long, just cut-and-paste its contents here.

The error folder I have is not in the "log" folder, but in its own file called "error"! I don't know why, maybe there were more errors than anticipated!
I have attached the whole folder (you know what you are looking at more than me!!). I really do appreciate your help with this.

I'm afraid that is not the correct folder as it is used for displaying standard HTTP errors from the web server.

The file you should look for should be <xampp-home>/apache/logs/error.log instead. Note that the file may not exist.

That can't be with XP Pro, as it comes pre-installed with Windows IIS Server, which uses Port 80 - the same port as a default XAMPP install.

Search on your PC for a file called 'hosts' or look in the Windows folder and see if you can find it there. You'll find that Port 80 is assigned to IIS. You can either reassign it to XAMPP or uninstall XAMPP and do a custom install on, for example, Port 8080.

Additionally, if you have Skype installed you have to set Skype not to use Port 80.
