missing German files?

I have installed the German language pack (not the whole install, just the files in includes/languages dir) and I always get this error at the top of the admin pages:
MISSING LANGUAGE FILES OR DIRECTORIES ... German Deutsch
I have compared file-for-file with the English version, and it seems all the files are there.

I had some real problems when I tried German as the default. I couldn't even access the admin area because of "Failed to open required file" errors. I don't really WANT German admin, but don't want errors either! I DO want the default for the shop itself to be German.

Any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I haven't used the German language pack so this information is based on my experience with the Spanish language pack.

In your admin - localization - languages - add new language (in this case German) and be sure to fill in the path (german ~ lower case g).

You'll need to make sure there is an admin / languages / german.php too

See if that solves this for you.

I finally added the admin part. The error message is gone, but every time I want to use the Define Pages Editor for the German pages, my whole admin turns German. I don't really want my admin in German, but for the few times I'll be using the Define Pages Editor, I guess I can live with it.
