categories left column not show up

Hi
For my test Zen store, I downloaded a template package. How does it come that the left column with vertical categories does not show up.
I have tried to fix this with Layout settings > main page - opens with category
and changed the value from 0 to the name of my category, which is Test.

When I then go to the browser it loads the homepage and for one single second I see a glimp of a left column box where my categories should be in.
Can anyone help me
