Default RUnning Zen-Cart on PHP 5 ISAPI mode - access violation

Running Zen-Cart on PHP4, it runs very slow on my hosted server. When upgraded to PHP5 ISAPI mode, it runs fine.. .however whenever someone tries to pay with paypall they get an :
PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 00000000

    when reaching this page:

    ----
Is there any way I can run on PHp5 and somehow fix this error? Or does the site need to be run on PHp4?

What version of Zen Cart? Which PayPal module? Any other addons installed?

Running 1.3.8. The only addons I have installed are for stock by attribute.

The paypal module is Paypal Express (the one that came with Zen-Cart).

Running on PHP4 it works, but the site is blissfully slow. On PHP5, it's extremely fast, but fails when it tries to send me to PayPal
