Setting up ZC on a Local Testing Server

I have read that some of you guys setup your stores on local server soyou can test changes before you go live. I have a Windows machine. Is there a place with detailed instruction that can tell me how to setup ZC locally for testing?

I want to try installing modules myself but the instructions tend to be are less-than-intuative for a newbie. I am afraid I'll screw something up. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that link! Problem: I only found xampp-win32-1.6.7 version and when I installed it, it keeps telling me it can't install apache because port 80 is in use. Do you have a suggestion as to how I can deal with this problem?

Try Wamp, always found it easier to install/use

Thanks for the link rebekah. However, I had already decided to try the Zen book's xampp-win32-1.4.16-installer version first. I have still run into the same port problem where I still can't get the apache to run. How do I make certain port 80 is open for apache only? I deleted all earlier xamp and apachie http installations. What else can I do?

Actually, the very first post in that link solved the problem! From it I learned of the "port checking" feature that is part of the xamp installation. I accessed it as part of the xamp family from start -> all programs -> apachefriends ..etc. I found a utility that I had no idea was hogging three of the ports I needed. I switched it off, ports opened and apace and mysql are running fine. Thanks!:)
