What I have done is added four buttons to the base.
1. Homepage
2. Refresh mod
3. Admin
4. Download mod

You can turn any or all of the buttons off via the settings.

The timer was a little difficult to implement. Do you have any other suggestions or do you think this will be good as it is?

I like the additions, the graphics do let you add more links for the space instead of just text links, nice.
Question though on the links to home or admin, I understand you can set this via settings to whatever you want but would assume most would set this to Home (yoursite.com) and admin to (yoursite.com/admin). If that is done then the small window for DD will need to be expanded. I like that idea as you have perm access to your zen-cart on your active desktop but it does mean you will have to expand this manually each time and or contract the page as needed. Unless theres a auto setting for this page expand?
4. Download Mod what is your thoughts on this button?

Clicking either the homepage or the admin button will open up these links in your default browser window, so the mod doesn't change appearance at all. Same goes for the download button.

I added the download button so it's easy to check if there's a new version available. It just opens up the mod's page in the Free Software Add Ons section.

now if I wanted to change the URL of one of the buttons?

Which button do you want to change the url of? If it's the admin button, there's a setting you can change to specify a location other than "admin".

the home button I would like to change, in my case I would send it to the livehelp admin page.
something like "mysite.com/livehelp/help.php"
