i want an absolute dumbed down version of zen. I have one product, thats all i want to sell. one price. can i make it so they just get one thing, they can pick the quantity, and thats it? check out. no sidebars or anything. just enter your info and hit "buy"

I would think that if you set your sideboxes and colum widths to 0 (admin/config/layout settings), and your center box width to fill in the space you just made (CSS maybe?) ....then make your category with the product and make that your main page (admin/config/layout settings/main page opens with category), it would work.

Be sure your sideboxes are all turned off too admin/tools/layout boxes controller.

Try admin/config/product listing/display product add to cart button for the quantities box...set it to 2.

I am sure someone with more exp will be along to confirm or give you a better way.

Perhaps you should just use a static html page with a pay pal link! Sound like Zen Cart is wasted on you!
