FREE image editing software

Im after a recommendation for some FREE image editing software. a friend of mine is going to help me get a load of items up on my site and requires some imae edition software to basically crop, resize images ready to upload to the site. It would also be handy if it could be used to make banners etc as well.

i use photoshop but i cant give him it due to license etc.

any one recommend a FREE easy to use software?

I use Imagemagick but only via the command line, so I don't know anything about the interface of this program.

When I was searching for some references, I frequently stumbled upon Irfanview. No experience with it, but it seems to be used a lot and to my knowledge, it is free for non-commercial use.

Search the forum for gimp. I know someone recommended it. I haven't used it myself.

Also take a look at http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/. I believe they may have an image editor.

I've been using PaintShopPro for years and don't really have any inclination to change. I should upgrade.

Paint.net is free and it's VERY similar to PhotoShop.

lol yeah, photoshop was ahead of its time but with digital camara so popular now that it wasn't long till 3rd parties brought out there own version.

i love photoshop though and even though i been using it for 8 years i still finding new things i can do.

while im here...... does anyone know any FREE software that can do a good live trace of an image to convert it to a AI vector file?? my version of illustrator is old (10) and the trace on it is shocking bad, the new live trace is awsome but i can justify the money to upgrade to CS3, th macromedia freehand trace is also good.

Check http://www.freeserifsoftware.com and http://www.serifsoftware.com. They may have something (both sites are the same company). I believe their Draw product might be what you're looking for.

I am shocked and appalled that nobody has mentioned the GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/).

Aside from being free, this software has many of the features available in Photoshop and Illustrator. Scripting support as well, for those of you who need to batch large repetitive tasks.

Native to UNIX/Linux, with stable versions also available for Windows and *chuckle* Mac OS X.
