categories expanded on all pages

i want subcategories to show up like this in the category sidebox. so the user doesn't have to click to expand the category.

i have tried a few different category mods and they are not working for me on zen-cart 1.3.8a
which mod should i use?

worked fine in zen 1.3.8.a
