Can Two Separate Products Share Same Inventory?

Here's the scenario. You have Product A and Product B. Is there a way to have both share the same product quantity value?

As an example, we two companies that put out the same item, but each have their own way of describing it. We would like to list this item twice in our store like this:

Product A from Company A
Product B from Company B

Where Product A and B are basically the same thing, only they may differ in manufacture model numbers or something. Since from a store perspective, these items are identical, is there anyway to have these two separate products listed in our store, but when something sells from Product A, it will also subtract one from Product B?

An observer hooked into the NOTIFY_CHECKOUT_PROCESS_AFTER_ORDER_CREATE_ADD_PRODUCTS or maybe even the NOTIFY_ORDER_DURING_CREATE_ADDED_PRODUCT_LINE_ITEM notifier could be used to decrement the inventory of the "other" product when a certain product is saved into a live order.

dr byte. could you clarify this response. i really need this two work.

i would like to list the same product twice on my store but with different prices. the prices would be dependent on the section of the store you click on. not all sections would be available for the general public.

i need though the inventory count to be linked together.

i could either do what you suggested above if you clarify please.

another option that would work for me would be is if there is a way to set a different salemaker price for a linked category than the master category.

the 2nd option might be better and easier if it is possible.

I think the notifier/observer approach I mentioned above is likely the best if you really need to have 2 separate products but keep their inventory set at the same amount.
