Multiple Items, Volume Discounts, plus Variable Shipping Rates

I'm about to change my store but I'm not sure as to how to proceed...

I have several DVDs (DVD1 through DVD7), books (book1 through book7), and a few misc items (misc1 through misc3). I'd like people to be able to order one or more DVD and get an automatic discount on price and shipping. For example, any 1 DVD would be $98 plus $10 shipping, any 2 DVDs would be $189 plus $16 shipping, any 3 DVDs $240 plus $20 shipping...

The same thing would go for the books (lower prices and rates) and misc items (also lower rates and prices).

How can this be done? I'm thinking about using attributes but all the variables are making my head spin. lol

Scott already has snippets of code that do just this, and his fees are very reasonable. What he can do for you will save you lots of time...

I noticed that different discounts can be applied to different categories, so all items under category A would be discounted at one rate while those under category B would be subject to another discount. I did not see this for shipping rates (as mentioned above).

You'd get a discount with the 2 CDs and regular price/shipping for the book.

See what Kim is asking... There are lots of possible variables here. Each one makes code writing more challenging.
