"Customize my order" - PC / or Product customization Add-On

Has anyone written a "customize my order" add-on allowing a shopper to add various additional options, or change specifications, of product ordered via a drop-down set of boxes or check boxes or something similar?

We run a Computer store, we custom build desktop PC's. Sadly none of us are versed in PHP though we could proabbaly catch up on it. We are wondering if anyone's made a add-on like this or can guide us in how to custom-make such an add on to modify the properties of a product/add on additional options / etc.

Example. We have a Basic product PC.
PC Has a basic set of specifications but no cpu, ram, hard drive etc. I want the customer to be able to choose each of these things from a check list or set of drop down boxes.

Any pointing us to the right resources will be very appreciated :-)

Why do you think you need an add-on? Zen Cart has fully configurable attributes for radio buttons, drop downs, check boxes and text input.
