help question import 1.2.6 data into 1.3.8??

I'm setting up a NEW 1.3.8 zen cart site, and I need to import "current" data from a 1.2.6-based site.

Are there any "gotchas" involved with bringing in all the 1.2.6 data, such as changed file or column names or database properties or anything else??

I especially need all the customer and order data to carry over, particularly things like passwords etc.

I've used EZ-Populate before, this should do the trick properly??

    Thank you, Tom

I was just playing with one of those, either 1.2.5 or 1.2.6, I forget ...

    The trick is ...

Create your new database and add your username and password to it and import the v1.2.6 database ...

Now run the /zc_install and make sure you are set for the UPGRADE ...

You want to Upgrade the Database ... and will see a number of checkboxes checked when you get there ...

Leave the first one checked, and uncheck the rest ... and update ...

You will see this happen several times until you are done and sometimes, you will see that it wants to run the same update twice ...

Go ahead and just do what it says it wants to do ... anything duplicated will just be reported as skipped ...

Once all checkboxes are clear, you are done upgrading the database ...

I didn't run into anything bad and other than a couple of upgrades in there that wanted to run twice I did have any issues ...

NOTE: do NOT upgrade a Live Site directly ...

NOTE: practice this a zillion times while getting the new working site up and running so you have all steps down to a 5 to 15 minute upgrade for when you want to do this for real ...

Use NotePad to help you get the steps down that you need to take to do everything ...

    Hello,
    Thank you for replying.
I check the UPGRADE even for a NEW ZC site??
I need my new site to be completely 1.3.8 code, no old code, just bring in the old data.
I will try this out etc.
What will we see happen several times -- the same upgrade screen with the checkboxes??
    What are these checkboxes about??
It seems I will have to do this two times -- once for the development server, then once again for the "new" live server, wherein I copy in all the php/css/etc. files from the development server. Am I correct??
    Thank you, Tom

Does this method also bring in all the configuration data file/table from the older installation??

Is there a way to upgrade such that I can have a new configuration data file/table and all the previous products/attributes/orders/customers etc.

I don't want to set up a new site having configured this and that and then have all my new configurations over-written.

    Thank you, Tom

When taking an old 1.2.x version to a new 1.3.x version of Zen Cart, you have to start the code itself from the newest version as the templates are not compatible ...

The database, on the other hand, can be upgrade from the v1.2.x to the current version with the Zen Cart Installer ...

You would NEVER upgrade a Live Site, but you can upgrade a copy of your Live Site Database ...

Since most everything for v1.2.x is out dated, from the original code to the add-ons to the templates, starting with a clean copy of the current version, in this case v1.3.8a is best ...

Practicing the upgrade gives you the advantage of knowning step by step just what you need to do to upgrade your Live Site database to your New Upgraded site database and each step that you need to follow, plus give you time to design your templates and overrides ...

Once you can do this upgrade perfectly and have all the steps down that you need to follow for customizing it, you can set the Live Site to the Down for Maintenance ... Backup the Live Site database again ... Load this to your New Upgraded Site database ... run the /zc_install and follow any steps you need to finalize the upgrade and not lose your customers, orders, products, etc. etc. etc.
