Gmail with 1.38 or not

Hello,

I've been reading up on what problems exist in using Gmail as the smtp server in Zen Cart and taken a look at the files that have been changed in 1.38 (functions_email.php, class.smtp.php, class.phpmailer.php) to add the possibility to send with tls for Gmail. I've tested a few things and haven't had any luck.

My question is does this work at all or is there more changes necessary to make it work? Do I have to wait for 1.4 or is there a way to make it work for 1.38?

While I've not personally used it, I recall hearing people have success with v1.3.8a and gmail.

Any tips on how to configure it? I don't seem to have any luck just entering the standard values in the e-mail options menu. I've double checked the entries for typing errors and compared them to my regular mail client settings but it still doesn't connect to the google smtp server.

I'm no programmer but it looks like there may be some settings in the files that were modifided for gmail e.g. in functions_email.php it looks like it needs to be set whether ssl or tls is used. I've tried what looks sensible to me but have had no luck are there other settings that need be made in the php files?

Okay, I just tested it ... quite simple really ... following this FAQ article: http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.p...s#Google_Gmail

* Set up as SMTPAUTH
* SMTP user/password: use your gmail account (including ######################) and password
* SMTP Host: smtp.gmail.com
* SMTP Port 465

No coding changes needed, if using v1.3.8a or newer.

Sorry for the trouble, I looked at the FAQ in the wikki and the instructions are quite simple. I must have done something wrong because that's what I thought I did and it didn't work. I'll have to take a look at it when I'm home and have some time.
