Easy Populate and adding Images

It took a few tries, but we got all 10,000 products on the site using Easy Populate and we're now uploading graphics in the 3 different sizes. I can get the graphics to work if I go through admin one by one. My question is: Can I edit individual products with Easy Populate? Lets say I cut and paste 500 of my products onto another spread sheet and insert the image.jpg into column B will the rest of my products remain on the site unchanged or will I lose them? And will Easy Populate attach attributes using column A (v_products_model) as the target?

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

When using EP, did you add image name to each product
within EP?

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Thanks for the replies! I didn't put in images the first time I did EP. I had planned on uploading images as I went through them later. After using EP I'm wishing I had done this in the beginning. Now I'm saving all my images and naming the same as the SKU or model name and have saved them as image, image_MED, and image_LRG in respective folders. I'm hoping that I can now go through and update the items I have images for and EP will just add the images to those items I modify. .. Rather than uploading the entire inventory file again I'd just update a few hundred at a time.

I'm going through the Wiki information now and downloading my tab delimited files to give it a go. .. Now would be the time to stop me

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

There shouldn't be any problem if you try to upload the exact same tab delimited file if you only add the image file names (with paths). I have done it many times.

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Only need to state one image in each product via EP..then
install Image Handler..it will resize that image to med and lrg images for you.

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Make sure you resize your images and load them in the proper folders. Such as large, med. A good resizer is Mihov Image Resizer. It will do 1000's within mins. Also a good batch renamer is IrfanView. Then you can ftp them all. Including your small pics. Then just put the pic name in your ez populate and reload it.The is a F&Q I think in here someplace that gives the set by step process. It's super easy.

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Thanks for the help :) It's coming together slowly. I've been using photoshop with a script to resize. So far everythings gone to the right folders on the database, but the quantity still seems neverending!

Am sure that is very good program, but then you
are left with hundreds of images on home computer
which need to be ftp'd into zencart..
IH2 will do it all for you, within zencart, using just one image
per product, entered via easy populate.

I started with a few of the pictures this way, but ran into problems with different size pictures from different manufacturers coming out to the same width, but different heights. When I asked how to get things lined up I was pointed to the thread on image preparation by ryk.

Also, using Image Handler in Zen Cart requires opening each item, finding the file, and uploading 1 by 1. This way I can mass produce the images in batches. If I'm wrong here, PLEASE tell me an easier way :frusty:

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Yes I use the image preparation by ryk. Seems to make things go faster. For you and the site.

Misty, you have to have the pictures saved someplace anyways. On the pc or disc. The whole process from image resizing, renameing and ftp can all be done in mins, not hours. Plus the site doesn't have to work that hard so it makes run faster. The hardest part of it all was playing with the programs to "get the hang of it".

Anyways, that's my $.25 (use to be 2 cents, but with inflation and all..)

Re: Easy Populate and adding Images

Let me get this right, with Zen Cart and Easy Populate you can insert the image name in the .CSV file but you must then import all the images to the correct site image folder using an FTP program. Is this correct?

What you cannot do is simply insert in column 2 the image URL (something like http://www.xxxx.com/images/required_image.jpeg) from your suppliers export file.

If this is correct then this makes the whole process quite difficult when importing thousands of products.

You are correct.

The easiest thing to do is use a program like wget to automatically download all of the images from the supplier's site and then you can easily upload the images to your images directory via ftp. I think it's better to host the images anyway since you are not dependent on a remote server to serve your images. You can find a thread here with the commands to use in wget to get the images, search for wget and you should find it.

This way, you can bulk upload products and the images.
