add to cart, not working

I have a new install of zen. I tried to do the stock attribute add-on but didn't know how to use it so I uninstalled it.
I am sorry to say I don't know if the error I am having now was happening before that add-on.

I do have the enable error logging turned on but it is not detecting this error.

when I select an item to add to cart - hit the button-- it takes me to a page that say's "TEXT_CART_EMPTY"

then when/if I hit the "shopping cart [more]" button I return to the same page, when not logged in. when I am logged I can click the shopping cart link and get sent to a page that has this all over it

I am adding to this thread that we are on a linux server, mysql current ala _godaddy_

I found more on this error, it is the constants that are not defined, so I reuploaded the entire language and default_template/template files. and I am still seeing the same error.
the error debugging is not seeing this error.

should I change the title to this thread?

edited to add the store in question..it's messy because of the new language intall
