If you're talking about working with Zen Cart, there's plenty of information in the tutorials/FAQ.

The basic requirements would be an image editor (like GIMP, PaintShopPro or Photoshop), a good text editor (like Crimson Editor or Notepad++) and an FTP client (like Filezilla).

I suggest you Google for online tutorials for at least html and css and become familiar with those before embarking upon design
Can you and do you have the ability to edit pictures in multiple formats?

W3Schools has some good information/tutorials, but there are tons of others.

well my trial photoshop is 5 days to end , i don't have 700.00$ to purchace the software.. is there any free non trial progeams that would work in the place of photoshop. As far as learning , well minus the horrible tech support from templatemonster where i purchased my template, i have learn some of the photoshop, and flash on my own. i have started with zencart ver 1.3.8.1 i have been going through the tutorials and it is different from my version , a little confusing.

I've never used it, but GIMP has been mentioned on the forum as a good free product.
