Um ... you said "new install with easy populate and no additional add-ons". But ... your site seems to be using bmz_cache for images ... which would mean you have Image Handler installed.
You didn't mention Image Handler before. Turn that off, and your problem will likely go away.
And ... that would confirm that your server is having a hard time processing the image manipulation that Image Handler offers.

yes, at the time of writing it didn't have image handler, I just threw that on a couple hours later to test it out...
I also removed the php involved with loading the picture, so the product image is picture-less.
deleted everything in tpl_modules_main_product_image.php
, still it was very slow 12 sec. With no pictures, so strange...
I will turn on GZIP now.

But unfortunately my product pages still load slow, close to the same time. Other pages are quick though :)
