Problems with Attributes

Hi,

Problem, using attributes as a text field and 'forcing' it as a 'required' attribute it doesn't work. The field can be left blank without any warning or stop script.
I have read and followed the instructions for article 57 ( Linda's excellent article on using attributes ) yet it will not work.
I have also resorted to the standard template - just in case with no result.
I am using V1.3.8a.
Any help or suggestions.

I have tried a virgin install test cart and the result is the same problem - I cannot set the input fields to 'required' and thus flag up a javascript error when a field is left blank.
I am by no means proficient in javascript ,or PHP if it comes to it. Any help appreciated.
