Default Totally Confused re: Payment Options

I am utterly confused. Either I've yet to follow the correct steps in order to allow, safely and easily, customers to make purchases from my store OR I've followed too many different steps. Perhaps someone could tell me if it's not even possible what I'm trying to do because at least then I'll know...I assume(d) that Paypal was the least costly and most easily configured way to do this but........

    Ideally what I want:

    - Customers to be able to make purchases from my store by paying via paypal WHETHER OR NOT they have a paypal account.
    - To have their transaction be in a 'pending' mode until I log in to my paypal account and release the transaction after I have reviewed it.

I tried setting up the filter thing in paypal for all transactions over $0.01 and although it 'said' that I had configured it correctly...I tested it by making a purchase and nothing was flagged.

I've read the various tutorials on the differences with paypal standard and paypal express and I'm still confused as to which is going to allow me to put in place what I want (noted above).

I'm about 5 hair pulls away from forgetting paypal and going with another option...not that I know what that would be because if I'm not mistaken, I have to have a merchant account with a bank in order to accept ccs any other way.

    Hi laurenjj

I have been doing exactly what you are trying to achieve:

All my payments are being processed through paypal, regardless of the credit card type used by the customer.

Go to Admin > Modules > Payment Modules.

Make sure that PayPal IPN and PayPal Express Checkout are sporting a green light - meaning that the modules are installed and properly enabled. Further instructions can be accessed by clicking the appropriate line.

Set your parameters for PayPal Express Checkout like this:

    Requirements:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*CURL is used for bidirectional communication with the gateway, so must be active on your hosting server (if you need to use a CURL proxy, set the CURL proxy settings under Admin->Configuration->My Store.)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Enable this Payment Module
    True

    Sort order of display.
    1

    Payment Zone
    --none--

    Set Order Status
    Processing [2]

    Set Unpaid Order Status
    Pending [1]

    Set Refund Order Status
    Pending [1]

    Express Checkout: Require Confirmed Address
    No

Express Checkout: Select Cheapest Shipping Automatically
    No

    Express Checkout: Skip Payment Page
    Yes

    Express Checkout: Automatic Account Creation
    Yes

    Payment Action
    Final Sale

    Transaction Currency
Only AUD [set to your currency - mine is Aussie Dollar]

    PayPal Page Style
    Primary

    API Signature -- Username
    [get this from PayPal]

    API Signature -- Password
    [get this from PayPal]

    API Signature -- Signature Code
    [get this from PayPal]

    Live or Sandbox
    live

    Debug Mode
    Alerts Only

    -------------

If the customer has a valid CC and PayPal accepts the payment, the amount is credited to your PP account, PayPal creates a new customer account in your DB and order status is set to "processing". Now the responsibilty is yours to fill the order.

If the customer pays by eCheck or bank account then PP sets the order status to pending until PP receives payment. In either case PP notifies you (and the customer) about the status.

Also read again the PP documentation at the PP site.
